There's an expression the book Watchmen: "if he's pretending to care, it means he cares". There's a lot of truth to that.

Of course, some people are told to smile and they struggle, but you don't know what is going on with them. And you've likely never thought to ask. But equally, you don't want some stranger ruining your appetite with their sob-story.

So, service-with-a-smile is something we should just take at face value. The alternative is just curmudgeonly bullshit. No need to look down on it, and no need to be cynical about intent.
Service is social. Authenticity matters.

I’ve always tipped wait staff in the UK.
Good for you

My AI chat tells me that it’s customary to tip 10%.
AI sometimes (almost always) makes mistake

Polite visitors look up and follow local customs.
Correct, although tipping somebody for doing their job is not a 'custom' in my book.

‘’Rab’ is a dickhead making it worse for his fellow Scots. If he can afford a ticket, he can afford the $3 tip on his breakfast.
Rab might well be a dickhead, I don't know him. However, with the massive costs involved with going to the WC that $3 per meal might tear into the budget of his trip, especially over 2 or 3 weeks?

If Rab can’t afford the trip taking everything into account then Rab should probably stay home.
Don’t be like Rab.

As an example , in budgeting for an African safari, tipping guides and drivers will add $100s to that kind of vacation. You account for it when you budget the trip in the same way you account for hotels or you can probably slink off while the other tourists tip and hope that no one calls you out for being a cheap cunt.

Spoke to a tour company manager in India about this. Although they’re often the most demanding, the guides and staff LOVE white American tourists — not me unfortunately — because they’re the best tippers in the world. Brit’s? Even though they’re not as demanding, not so much!

Tipping guides and drivers on a safari is very different to tipping somebody who has just given you ham and eggs.

Agreed — but both are customary whether you like it or not.
You WILL get chased outside by a waitress demanding to know what was wrong with her service. You won’t be able to go back to an establishment you might have enjoyed.

My advice: if you’re in a bar and don’t plan to tip then open a check at the beginning of the night and keep it open. Not everywhere will allow this for non-regulars.
If you’re paying as you go and don’t tip, you’re unlikely to get served by the third round.

Fuck that bar then. The person behind the bars’ job is to keep the drinks flowing - they get paid to do that. Want your staff to get paid more? Put the fucking prices up. I’m at a bar, I want to relax. I don’t want to be doing arithmetic and wondering if I’ve offended the beer monkey.

Don’t be relying on me to make up any deficit you feel you have in your wages.

I bought a new vacuum cleaner in Curry’s yesterday. Great service. Lassie was really nice, chatty, helpful. Did she get a tip? No. Is she on a decent wage? No. Do you think I should have tipped her?

They make the calculation for you and suggest a sum on the bill ... with a card payment you can normally just push a button and add 10, 15 or 20 per cent as the tip.

Nice one . Perhaps you can share this term with Rab so he can truly express his contempt for the working class of Boston?

I’m sure Rab will get on just fine on his own. Incidentally, when I was younger, I spent time working in pubs that would make you void your bowels just by seeing from across the road. I know working class. But I don’t respect whining because you have a job that doesn’t pay you enough money without demanding it from me.

Makes it a tiny bit more palatable, but not enough. Good service and above merits a tip. Average and below doesn’t. Tipping whatever the service is fucking ridiculous.

Striker live for goals though, they have to be selfish and that's why they are strikers, yet Kane is the most team orientated striker out there.
I haven't read the interview but it feels like you have something of an axe to grind against the bloke?
No axe at all. Harry always says he wants to be Spurs top scorer, England’s top scorer etc etc . Players like that often play for the, selves. Take a free kick, Harry although he has only ever scored from 1 for us that I can remember. Just 1 more though and he’s nearer a record.

I think you’ve been watching too much TV showing homey, midwestern diners maybe.

I don’t get cheesy saccharin service. I get fast, efficient, unobtrusive service where my coffee cup is refilled before I ask for it.

I probably spend 10 weeks or so every year outside of the U.S. — mostly but not exclusively in Europe or Asia — and absolutely fucking nowhere beats urban U.S. service.

My friends who drink tell me that the bartenders in New York (even if the service can be surly) are the most efficient on the planet.
I've been to Boston, Chicago, and New York in the last 18 months. I saw very little difference in the service on offer to what I experience in Europe. The best service I've experienced was in Japan. Ironically, tipping in Japan is not culturally acceptable.

For the most part, I find that if you are open and friendly with service staff, you get a good service. I usually give a modest tip if the service is average, and a decent tip if it's good. In general, I find that I give good tips far more often than not.
