It's harsh, but I can certainly see how the ref could argue that it's a red - once he's decided it's a penalty, then it's pretty much a red by definition, as it was directly blocking a shot on goal from close range. It's either a penalty and a red, or it's play on - don't see how it could be anything in between. Can't see any chance of getting it overturned on appeal.

was never a red. his hands were in completely the wrong place so i agree with the penalty, even if it was 'accidental' but a red is madness (especially as it was given by the lino and the ref didn't even see it).

To be fair Foy didn't give it initially, then the lino did. And once it's given, it pretty much has to be a red.

He did not have to give a red. If he hadn't nobody would be saying "he should have sent Naughton off" other than you maybe. It was accidental, a penalty is punishment enough.
