Well, he was a club captain with an excellent mind for the game.
Being a player and being a coach are very different things, but he was always one that had "future manager" type attributes as a player.
The thing you wonder is why it took eight years from the end of his playing career to get involved in coaching. Poch had a very tight staff, you could see why maybe the thought was that throwing a novice, outsider, non-Spanish speaker into the mix wouldn't be great for either side.
We'll see how it goes, obviously we all wish him the best.

I hate putting this in print, but when a certain player absconded to that lot down the road I never thought we would get even an half-as-good replacement. But then Ledley came along, and he blew that so-and-so out of the water. Even with a dodgy knee, he is without question the best defender I have ever seen in a Spurs shirt, by a country mile. When he played, he made his defensive partner look better. I had complete confidence in him, which is usually a rare feeling with our defence over the years (probable exceptions were Mabbsie/Gough and Jan/Toby at their peak).
Yes, I agree that if he hadn't had a dodgy knee, he would have probably moved to a top team abroad, his ability was undeniably of the highest quality.
I'm ecstatic that we have found a position for him, and I hope that he thrives in his new role.

Absolute legend but whenever i have seen interviews with him he doesnt really come across like a coach to me but hopefully I'm wrong
When Thierry Henry says you're the best defender he'd ever played against, you know you were great.Ledley with his one knee in his prime is better than a prime VVD and I don't care what anyone says.
With 2 working legs I reckon he would've been the greatest defender the world has ever seen.
Wonder if he could teach what he was able to do on the pitch, if he has that ability as a mentor.

Even if it is, I genuinely don't care. Having someone like Ledley at the club is important, and having him in a first team role is fantastic. I am not a Mourinho fan but he is a coaching legend and Ledley getting an opportunity like this is great for him.
I'm not going to act like I know what makes a great coach or manager - you look at great managers throughout English football and its an eclectic mix. Even if it doesn't work out it's a great opportunity for Ledley and I hope he's cut out for it. If not, there's always a place for him at Spurs.
He will be what the 3rd or 4th most important coach, with a very specific, defined role.
Not sure if he has a long term future in coaching but I don't think it is a stretch to have him come in and work with the defense, maybe even the CB's specifically.
I am imagine Jose and Sacremento are doing the heavy lifting anyways with Lalin (know nothing about him) having a lot of experience as well.
I doubt we were considering bringing Laurent Blanc or someone of that level so if our 4th coach is a specialist CB coach that offers experience as a club captain and England standout and is a bit of a PR boost as well, we likely will end up being just fine.

I’m only a couple weeks older than Ledley and being a defender myself I used to go to games and watching him and Woodgate at their best it was mind blowing , too easy for them, saw them bully Drogba to the point he had to be subbed
Incredible player, met him 3 times in the US he is a great man too, good luck to him and with Jan gone he can push on those younger defenders
Quite like this read. We will just see how he developed as a coach or not, new ground for everyone involved really. But given the amount of uncertainty with COVID and how this impacts sides financially and as a consequence the transfer of players, we might be leaning more on academy players in the next couple of years. If so this could be a super appointment.
I've met Ledley a couple of times, all official occasions (whilst he was carrying out Spurs duties either as Captain or as an Ambassador) I can't emphasis enough just how "normal" he is and that's meant as a positive. He is the most approachable, down to earth player I think I've ever met as within seconds you forget who he is and it's just like talking to a really nice person as your wait for a bus or something.
But even outside of the "official" business he's the same bumped into him twice now.
Time will tell...
Either way, if it works out, we've given him the perfect opportunity to cut his teeth... and if it doesn't work out, there's still all the corporate stuff!
Gary Mabbutt springs to mind here... never gonna be a coach/manager, but a truly lovely bloke who was loved and respected by his peers.... so Spurs employed him in a Corporate capacity, based on the feelgood factor he brought with him!
To be honest, in today's game, there are already so many 'experts' and scientific specialists in EVERY aspect of fitness, conditioning, diet, training, psychology, mental well-being...
Fuck it, why NOT have an ambassadorial 'coach' to help inject the 'feelgood factor' and a sense of History into the players...?

Hoddle was a legend and had a lot of good experience as a Manager including England but when it was not working out he was sacked. There is no room for sentimentality in Football. Whilst it is difficult to assess an Assistant Manager, he must be judged on merit and not sentimentality. He was a truly great player and I hope he turns out to be a truly great Manager.
