Alasdair Gold says Alejo Veliz has wowed Tottenham coaches

Tottenham came out of nowhere and signed Alejo Veliz from Argentinian side Rosario Central in the summer for £13 million (BBC).

Not many had heard of the 20-year-old, but early signs show he is a big talent.

Veliz was sidelined for over a month after his arrival because of his injury. He was included in first-team training last month, and even though Postecoglou publicly claimed he will not play him in the first half of this season, the youngster made his debut against Liverpool last weekend.

Speaking about Postecoglou’s comments and Veliz, Gold revealed on the Gold and Guest podcast that the striker has amazed everyone at Hotspur Way.

He said: “I think that’s a testament to Veliz because from what I understand, he has come into those training sessions after coming back from the injury he arrived with and he’s absolutely wowed them. He’s done really good work in training, and apparently his finishing, especially, is just phenomenal.

“I know the Premier League is a leap, but I do think that maybe he’ll, especially with that big physique, be ready for the Premier League. I mean he is a unit, having stood at pitch-side near and kind of walked by, he is a big lad, he’s just towering over players and coaches.

“Yeah, I think he’s one of those where maybe we see him get a minute or two and he surprises everyone and comes up with it.”

He’s already considered more advanced of our home grown lads who are really playing well apparently.

That’s because he is better. He’s been playing first team football in a tough league and thriving. To do that at a young age and be able to handle the physical side of the game shows he’s ready. I think we’ll see him getting on the pitch more in the coming weeks. This boy could be a star. From the footage we have seen from him he looks like a real centre forward. Big,strong, great in the air, great touch and will run in behind.

Usually Gold gets leaks like this when a player is about get proper minutes.

If that happens Veliz is waaaay ahead of schedule

we are going to need him with all these injuries mounting up. this is the time for him and gil to step up and become solid first teamers.

prem games are never easy but if we are cruising 3 or more after 60 mins be nice for him to get a 30 min run out

For me, this is the best part: "his finishing, especially, is just phenomenal."

You could see from the videos of his games in top flight Argentinian football that Veliz was strong, good at holding the ball up and bringing team mates into the game. Also that he was exceptional in the air.

But it was hard to tell how good a finisher he was from a couple of goals on YT.

Fundamentally, Veliz looks to have the skillset & physique of a dominant, aggressive, CF. But many of the ones we've seen in the PL have been average finishers.

If our coaches have watched Veliz in training and concluded he is a natural finisher as well, then he's a genuine top prospect.

I'm hoping that we knew that BEFORE we bought him.

I can see him starting up top today, with Son deeper... I assume it would possibly be Richie making way, but to replace Son at some point during the game...

We gotta manage this game properly today!!

Then we can worry about the rest....

Will he be our own Julian Alvarez? Hope so. It’s about time we tapped the South American market.

Yeah, we've always been really slow in that regard

Im not sure why people are so shocked Veliz is so close to getting substantial game time.

Look at Julian Alvarez, Pep threw him in pretty much as soon as he arrived and he has thrived since.
The Argentine league isn’t a farmers league. If you’re playing in it at Veliz’s age, you’re doing well.
