It was quite a weird game in that 2 nil at half time and the game was finished. Everton were so bad, that between 45 and 60 minutes we didn’t really seem to know what to do with the ball. But we did well to keep it and it’s probably because Ange told them to keep it tight and not concede. After the subs we then went for it and got the next goals.

I would say we looked superbly prepared for the game. Eg. Son’s first goal was no fluke. It almost happened twice before pickford making the same mistake because he was quickly closed down. We’d obviously targeted him there.

Same with the set pieces. It now looks like we are working on them properly. Like against Leicester, the attacking ones had variation. Defensively we didn’t concede despite some goal mouth scrambles but it didn’t go in and hopefully we take heart of that and grow into defending them even better.

He and his coaches had a good day.
Good post, and a nicely balanced one, considering you were posting not so long ago that you were kind of dreading this season.

You make a very good point on Son's goal, which most, and I include myself in that, missed. It's those smaller details that often go under the radar for us laymen, which just go to emphasise that much of the criticism of his coaching can be off the mark. That's not to say that some of it isn't justified, but shows that proper coaching isn't the instant fix that more than a few think it is.

Having said that, it is a poor Everton side so, conversely, we can't be crowing about how wonderful we were, but we did to Everton exactly what we would expect to do. We'd have done the same to Leicester had we been as clinical.

Fingers crossed we are as clinical against Newcastle, as I expect us to have as much of the ball, if not more, than Southampton did, and that was before the sending off.

Net spend less than 150m and wage bill DOWN under Ange.

Now consider that wage bill correlates stronger to league finishes and trophies than transfer fees.

Doesn't really fit the narrative though does it?

Wait, you WANT us to not give the young players we’ve signed an incentive to get better?

When you lose a load of older players, the wage bill goes down. Not to mention the N’Dombele factor (or should we just have kept him so his thread could be kept on page 1 for people to keep frothing at the mouth?)

Obviously not. They were both deals agreed for Conte's project.

I can't say I am still particularly thrilled because I think the team is wholly set up to make the same mistakes. However, yesterday definitely made me think that we arent just turning up to play the same way every week and there are a few more nuances. Everton were as bad a team as I've seen at the new ground though for sure.

Regarding the dreading, I think I'm just a bit saturated with football and how much VAR has taken away from actually enjoying games. Yesterday it wasnt noticeable, except you could tell they were checking the goals afterwards, which is fine but when it is so obvious nothing is wrong they really shouldnt need to. I suppose they are under such scrutiny now though they have to.

There are posters in the same bracket doing the mental maths to justify Jenas' actions mate.

🤦‍♀️
Yeah, these will be others who've never experienced it, or known those who have experienced it.

My daughter suffered it from a twat who couldn't take no for an answer. The mental stress she suffered meant she quit her job and stopped going out with friends locally, as he'd essentially stalk her, even at her gym.

It only stopped when I joined her one day and "explained" to him just what his pursuit was going to get him. He wasn't a nasty kid, he just didn't understand what he was putting her through.

Ignorance again. Some learn when it's explained to them, others glorify in it.

Funny that you bring up the officiating. I think the only game we've previously played in, where there were no cards at all, was City.

We're massively critical of the refs virtually every week, so praise where it's due here, that team had a good game and let the game flow as it should, so fair play.

And I thought Scottish forums were mad...

Given the resources made available Ange has done a brilliant job, but sure... cut him down and move on to some mediocrity who'll (with the same resources) take Spurs back to mid-table.
Of course, I don't know as much about the history of Spurs as you experts - I'm still studying what the history of this great club is and means.

So with all due restraint: I really enjoyed yesterday's game!

The manager has obviously set up the team very well. The fans in the stands were a force and gave the players on the pitch a sense of security.

Basically, I love it when the fans show who's boss - at home or away.

It's also clear to me that it was about Everton FC.
This club already now has problems, with a 0:7 goal difference.

And the fans of Saudi Arabia will certainly be of a different caliber.

Nevertheless (it could be because of my lack of historical awareness) I believe that Tottenham can get something from them.
Justified by the fact that "we" showed yesterday that we can do it!
In terms of passing, fighting, game intelligence.

(And who knows whether a new coach [I think the current one is not entirely innocent of the performance shown] will bring anything. Isn't this creating an unnecessary problem? Serious question, not a question for a friend - I don't have one

I actually can’t believe half the comments that I read on this thread. Spurs fans have had to watch the most diabolical brand of football for the last 4 years, now they have a manager who actually is trying to instil a fluent attacking hi press high pressure style of football and you have the beer belly arm chair bandits whining about conceding from set prices. The style of football that Ange wants to ingrain in the squad takes time to implement with a very specific type of player for each role and each role needs to be executed fluently and simultaneously. Squad depth is extremely important with this style of play, you basically need like for like replacements when doing subs so the machine can keep turning with no glitches- Madders off Bergvill on nothing lost, biss off Gray on nothing lost and the tempo won’t be lost etc etc. It’s still gonna take time so stop whinging over set prices and enjoy what’s getting built because it’s a hell of a lot better than what you have seen for the last 4-5 years

There was couple of times in injury time that there were challenges that could have been yellows from some officials, but it felt like he'd got that far without carding anyone and didnt want to ruin it. That's not a criticism btw, just something I was discussing with chums at the time.

Yeah, there were some heavy handed challenges in there, but no malice that I could see. The reactions of the players to each other showed that it was competitiveness and not cynicism. I think the ref took his cue from that as much as anything else.

You raise great points with the depth.

Last year we were having to bring on Hojbjerg. Or even Skipp. Who simply are miles below what the set up requires.

Now we have young mouldable players in Gray, Bergvall etc who are much more in tune with what the manager wants and allows us to seemingly regain momentum or keep up that tempo.

Even being able to bring on Spence instead of Emerson yesterday was a massive step up.
