I see- I make a comment strictly about the validity of the argument itself, and your response is annoyance that I express my opinion.

Not annoyed at all - i just found it funny that you were discussing the validity of an argument that wasn't really being made.

You weren't like - 'hahaha - good one Ange - clearly, he doesnt think that but if we actually discuss the point then...'

Question: Did Ange say or not that for him the most useless statistic in the world is the assist?

I can think of dozens of other more useless football stats.

He’s got a penchant for saying ridiculous things. I’m glad you thought it was funny but for me it just sounded naive and worrying.

I guess maybe you just don't get him like I do.... or like the journalists who were there who called it a 'tongue in cheek' comment.

If you want to worry about it then fair do's though mate

Assists obviously have their place and are almost always important, but what about the run from the other player to allow the space for the assist? Quite often even more important. Like everything in this beautiful game, there’s nuance in the statistics.
The way I took Postecoglou's statement was that coaches don't place much value on assist figures when evaluating players. That sounds reasonable, but it also is just stating the obvious. It's not an either/or thing. Assists aren't going away because of one off the cuff remark at a press conference.

I listen to Postecoglou's pressers and long for the days when our managers only spoke a limited amount of English.

I had forgotten that, but you're right. I think, too, the foreign managers sometimes used the language barrier to shield themselves from questions they didn't want to elaborate on. Postecoglou has the opposite problem, sometimes he keeps talking a little too long.

There were so many complaints about Poch not speaking English well and talking in riddles -

Impossible to keep the fanbase happy when it comes to pressers. Its why i don't watch them - they are essentially meaningless

I generally don’t have an issue with him in the press (the comment on assists was right) but sometimes he does come across like a massive grouchy dick. The way he reacted to ‘same old story’ that one time was really petty.

As others have said, it was clearly a tongue in cheek comment. You see, there’s this quirk with the English language where you can express things in a way intended not to be taken 100%literally, for instance to add emphasis or for humorous effect.

It’s like if I said, “Man, Eric Dier is the worst defender in the history of the Premier League” I’m probably aware that this statement wouldn’t stand up to any serious scrutiny, however in that moment I’ve expressed that I think Dier’s a bit shit.

So no, Ange wasn’t positing a serious argument that assists are the most meaningless statistic out of all the statistics because he’s given it a lot of thought and that’s the conclusion he’s come to. It was a throwaway, tongue in cheek comment with a hint of truth to set up what he said next, which was that Dane’s assist was a good one.

Some of you guys man, yeesh.

Who wouldn't - hes a human being having to go in front of a camera how many times a week? He isn't a professional journalist - who cares?

Why wouldn’t you care? It’s part of the job. The way he interacts with the media has consequences. Since he’s bit a few times they’ve tried it on more as they few him as an easy target for bites.

You get away with it with other elements of success (Klopp was a prick) but such small matters can quickly lead to death by a thousand cuts.

Ange is often contrarian out of spite (especially when asked a tough question) but with the assist stuff he's right. I remember Tom Carroll got an assist for passing the ball sideways to Bale when he scored that winner at West Ham.

There are lot of other things you need to look at if you want to evaluate the creativity of a player.
And SuperJan claimed the assist when Sonny scored THAT goal against Burnley.

(It was said tongue-in-cheek......................I miss Jan :( )

Why even listen then?

Honestly what insight are you really hoping to get from the manager during interviews -

I bet you could call pretty much every answer they would likely give

Because we’re trying to glean some insight as to how competent Ange may or not be- it’s legitimate inquiry to critically examine what key authority figures are saying.

Ange- and anyone else in a press conference- can choose to say less, or nothing at all. Usually more talking is worse talking.
