There’s not a single chance in hell that Ange would survive finishing 14th this season. Not a bloody hope.
I'll admit I could be wrong but just look at this board and how favorable the views are of Postecoglou. There are already people giving explanations of why he won't win early on and the constant refrain is a concern Mr. Levy won't back him. If Kane forces a deal that's a one year pass right there. I think if he wins more than he loses he will hailed as a genius and if he loses it will be 1)Levy's fault, 2)the fans, 3)circumstances beyond his control. It will be like Bielsa in Leeds. I think short of being relegated (which won't happen) he's got three years easy.

This board was mega behind Conte when he first arrived, fans are all in on a new coach till it goes south.

There isn’t even the slightest chance Ange, or any top 6 coach, survives a bottom half finish. They’ll be sacked before the season is out.

Let alone multiple seasons of that.

He will do the job, he has done it at all the other clubs he has managed, tried and true, not glossy and mouthy like Conte and Co!

Diatribe? You’re clearly confused once again. That wasn’t even close to being one.

“You guys need to make up your mind. On the one hand you are complaining that we should be run like Brentford and Brighton are, but when someone suggests we do just that, you retort with "we are not Brentford or Brighton.”

That’s what you wrote, that’s what I selected to address. It was perfectly clear what you thought, so I wrote what I thought. That’s how this forum thing works.

“The point was that, even if that did get resolved and given that this is a rebuilding year, would our league finish alone be the only indication of our progress? "We should never slide from 4th to 8th to 14th" is a desire and expectation from all Spurs fans, but it is not an answer to that question.”

It’s not a expectation of yours because you said it wouldn’t bother you, so clearly not all Spurs fans.

Would our league finish be the only indication of progress? No. We could win a domestic trophy, but even then I’d still see finishing 14th as a clear indication of regression. Why? We have no European football to worry about this season and they are two totally different types of competition. One is a knock-out, the other is endurance over a much longer period in all weathers. We have more time than the other top 7 teams to prepare for games.

We all want to see entertaining football and a happy, unified squad singing from the same song sheet. But do you really think we’ll see the latter if we’re languishing in the bottom third of the table by the end of the season? Romero, world cup winner, Richarlison, Brazil’s number 9, Son, the S Korean Captain … you think they’ll be saying “we’ve sunk like a ship but look how attacking we are?”

The PL is a competition. The objective should be to win,or at the very least, finish as high as possible. Ange himself said that coming second was coming last*

Now, I know you’re looking for glimpses of ‘progress’, whatever they may be (feel free to tell me) but if you’re an elite footballer or a win-or-die manager, there is no progress if you can’t push on from the place you started, and if you are contented with less then you shouldn’t be anywhere near the PL.
Again, you are missing the point of the question, which is very specific: does the league table tell the whole story?

It's OK, you don't have to bother answering. You're just going to give me another "we should be winning / the players won't be happy / we may win a cup" type of answer, which we all agree with, but which has nothing to do with the theoretical scenario I am posing.

This is Spurs. If something can wrong in some bizarre way it will. Maybe there will be leaked video of Postecoglou hunting Koala bears in the outback, or he'll find a loophole in his contract and escape to the Saudi Pro League for boatloads of oil money and take Son and Kane with him. There could be embarrassing pictures of him wearing a kilt from when he was in Scotland. Maybe he'll do something really outrageous like playing Eric Dier 90 minutes a game. Worse still, maybe in his first game he'll park the bus and in a post game interview after losing 2-1 to Brentford in the 93rd minute he'll rip off a face mask and it will turn out he's actually Nuno.

Or maybe, just maybe, he will win us the league, here's to that!

Poor Ange has inherited a mess. I think it will take 2/3 windows and a couple of seasons to sort it out. All we as fans can really do is get behind him and be patient.
The only real question is will he last 2 seasons without support from the Levy gang....

Again you are confused. I answered your question. I said no. But your question means nothing divorced from its original context (final league position). Perhaps it would help if you say what actually 'tells the whole story'.

Progress is a general term that can be applied to many areas. Maybe Ange improves Lo Celso. Maybe we score more goals. Lots of maybes. But the final position in the league tells us if we've really progressed and there's no getting away from that. If we are still 8th but going for it he's steadied the ship (and I'm ok with that). If we we are 6th+, he's doing great. If we're in your comfort zone of 14th (which I don't think we've seen since Pleat), he's failing miserably. All your 'signs of progress' mean fuck all if that's where we finally reside (which, btw, I don't think we will).

Ange has been brought in to help us win. We need to give him time (I don't expect a fast start), but that doesn't mean he has free reign to let us sink to the bottom third of the table.
