Why is finishing 5th bad?

We drew a football match last night.

I just don't get why after drawing a football match, everyone knows we should have won gets an over analysis of why Ange's football doesn't work? It clearly worked in the first half and parts of the second but unfortunately the players on the pitch didn't convert the chances. If they had have scored does Ange's football go from being unviable to the best in the league?

It isnt just after this game though is it. It is after watching us for the last 5 months of last season and this preseason and seeing everything is the same and nothing has been worked on defensively as we are still as vulnerable as ever. Attacking wise, he hasnt got the players who are good enough.

Unless I've got your tone wrong, you're seemingly saying it is knee jerk, when it isnt that at all.

I would say I thought both set pieces attacking (lots more variation) and defending looked a lot better than previously. However, Everton wil be THE test of that.

I don't buy into the poor run we had towards the end of the season, we had a tough run of fixtures that we lose most years and that wasn't going to change over night.

The mad thing is I don't feel as if teams cut us open, we usually concede through player errors rather than the system. Last night Romero failed to mark his man which results in Vardy scoring. That was their first shot on target after 60mins!

I guess you could say this system does require Man City players but unfortunately as we all know we haven't got the resources to do that, so why have the expectations that we do? We operate as a club within our means, we don't have the luxury to just buy world class super stars like Citeh do. Remember when Pep first joined City, he bought Bravo for £30m, realised he was useless playing out from the back and then had the finances to spend £60m on Ederson.

When Ange first signed with us he was given a 4 year contract, which alot of fans were happy about as they wanted some consistency, well we are only into the second season after a promising first season. Why let a 1-1 draw away to Leicester in the first game of the season where we for the majority of the match played to a good standard cause unrest and negativity? I get wound up about it because you can guarantee fans in the stadium Saturday will go back to the norm of wanting to boo at half time when it's 0-0 which just causes a poor atmosphere.

Getting the best out of Son isnt sticking him wide an isolating him, it's having him as close to goal as possible

Get your best players into their best positions

The stubbornness on this formation is crazy
Son doesn’t even appear to be being actively coached or encouraged to get to the end line, which should be his number 1 objective in this system.

It’s baffling to me why Ange thinks this is going to work out.

I don't disagree mate. I thought we were phenomenal the first 45 minutes.

And at times last season. When Angeball works it's magnificent. But you have to score.
Aye, scoring is pretty key to the system working.

I get some of the reaction to last night, even if it is only one game. Lingering doubts are understandable given how we ended last season. Plus there was evidence in that second half that certain issues remain, especially around how we shat it for a period after conceding. That happened last season and if it happens again at somewhere like away to Newcastle, 1 down can very quickly become 2 or 3 down as we know all too well.

That said, I also think some of the positives have been lost due to the disappointing result. The first half was sheer domination. Granted we probably could and should have created more and better chances, but even with what we did create, on another day we could have easily gone into the half 2 or 3 up. There was also evidence of different and varied patterns of attack, not just the get it to a wide player and low cross of the end of last season. Also, they were seriously struggling to get out whenever they regained possession in their half, repeatedly having to go long to no one, which was easy for our CBs to mop up and afforded us almost complete control of the game.

Perfectly reasonable to be very concerned at potential to continue in this direction.

that stat is wrong

if its the final 12 games of last season it was 6 defeats, with Villa being the extra forgotten about victory but i guess that ruins his point . 6L 5w 1d

if it's inc yesterday then it's still 6 defeats 4 wins & 2 draws

and just for added context the defeats were Woolwich , Newcastle, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man city, Fulham

it's like watching an episode of Ancient Aliens in this place sometimes, it's so one sided and manipulative:davieshmm:

Good point.

I’ll see you all after Everton.

If people want to make it draining and toxic to chat with other fans I guess the best thing to do is just step away,
You don't need to step away mate. You have every right to voice your opinion, even if some of us think it misguided. Just put all of those who are getting you down on ignore or something. That's what the function is there for.
It's a great function that means everyone can have their say, however controversial.

No matter how well we play we still concede and then so often we can't get back on track .We haven't a hope of really doing anything until this changes .
you need serious pressure put on the ball by the players in midfield and up top for this system to have any chance.

we had 9 men against chelsea but you saw the systems weakness when you dont have pressure on the ball, the other side will get in behind easily. this happened for vardy yesterday, the team looked tired and the intensity in front of the defence dropped off and they got in easily. he needs to make subs to get fresh legs out there earlier if he is going to have one way of playing!

lets see how long it takes against everton to inject some intensity back into midfield. everton are shockingly bad and should go down this year, if we cant destroy them then we are in trouble as thats back to back relegation candidates, we should be top after them two fixtures really.

All I heard was the need for entertaining football and we are entertaining to watch albeit mainly for neutrals!

We're going to be up and down all season, my only hope is that we save our best for the Cups, should we actually take them seriously of course.

I predict we'll finish lower this year BUT finally get our hands on some silverware.

The FA Cup, it's time.

like you say. Context is key. And their were some awful, appalling displays in those defeats. Two of which were against our biggest rivals.
One had to field their B team due to injuries and the other had 3 tough, draining matches as we were sat on our arses.
The less said about Newcastle and Fulham the better. It was a horrendous run of performances and results that no other manager would have got away with.

That's still underwhelming and extremely concerning, as we've just drawn to a dogshit team that will likely go straight back down and some of those same teams we lost to are coming up next.

The only gaslighting I've been seeing is by some who don't want to see we still have major issues that will likely hurt us going forward.

Those being realistic see trouble coming if they are not addressed.

Pre-season some insisted everything was fine and Ange was in control, even after we wilted in our first proper test against BM, with the same old problems glaringly apparent.

The hopium is pretty grating.

Not to say we don't all want Ange to figure it out (we do) but people are just going too far with the apologising for deficiencies.

Looking tired an hour into the first game of the season due to the demands of the system! That augurs well!

no, they are negative nigels. give the bloke a chance. he tore up the J league and the Z league and all the other b rate leagues with this system.

the games evolved a lot, older managers are getting shown up. its a bit like poker, used to be played by old men, when the younger lot found out the money involved they tore them apart with strategies and maths the older lot never knew existed. brighton have just hired a 31 year old manager....our guys 60 and comes from park football.

Obviously the system has been defensively poor last season, but in the Leicester match I didn't feel like we were open, outside of a few shots in a 15 minute window, one of which happened simply because a CB switched off, which isn't a system issue.
Yea, but it was Leicester that is the point. If we go up against a stronger opponent, we will be destroyed like the end of last season...

But you know.... "That is who we are...Mate"
