Not having an option in Moura has hurt us. We've had to keep playing Son despite his drop in form. When Kulu has been out at the same time, and Richarlison as well, we've had to call upon Gil
It's an accumulative effect.

Bentancur missed 2 in August/Sept and 4 since the return from the WC
Romero missed 3 between Aug and Sept and 5 between Oct and Nov so 8 from 18 missed.
PEH has been over played because we can't afford to rest him. Compounded by having to play with Skipp instead of either Bentancur or Bissouma. We saw how much PEH benefitted from having Bentancur to play with instead of Winks. They're a good combo.

With our fairly limited squad, these injuries are and have been a big factor.

The blame for Conte really is his utter refusal to see an unknown Djed Spence is a better bet than a tried, tested and failed Royal. He could have seen Diers head isn' straight but then his alternative is Sanchez or Tanganga.

Is it Conte's fault Son has fallen off a cliff? It's like someone has replaced last seasons prolific Son with a tired, confused clone. Pretty much half of our threat has hone with Son's form. Scary but how does Conte get blamed for this?
Long term injuries i agree with, players missing 2 or 3 here and there happens to every club every season.

I agree on Spence. I think he's used him as a bit of a scapegoat for perceived transfer failings which is poor. Sarr and Gil have had minutes out of neccessity and are proving good value members of the squad.

No its not all Contes fault on Son but he himself wanted Kane playing higher up the pitch which has helped Kanes goalscoring but not our creativity and not Sons running in behind and feeding off of Kane which was arguably his greatest strength. He's always been a fairly limited winger which is the role he now seems to be playing. I do think there has been a big drop off on Sons part though.

I think the point is, it's catch 22 whatever way you look at it.
I strongly believe that if we dropped Kane deep to create for Son, the team scores less goals. Kane can feed off scraps and score from nothing fairly consistently. Son just looks devoid of anything most of the time. Runs into the nearest defender or screws up one on ones because he can't decide where to place the shot. As good as Kane is at passing the ball about, I feel we'd have 2 players out of their best form by doing that tbh.

We all knew we were punching above our weight when we got Mourinho and again with Conte.

Mourinho had quite a few issues to contend with. Covid, extended injuries to Lloris, Kane and Son, Ndombele/Lo Celso failures and of course Rose, Aurier, Dele, Gedson & Lamela still stinking up the place.

Conte has now run into some challenges. Son's loss of form and injuries to Richarlison, Kulu, Romero and Bentencaur. Bissouma has failed to hit the ground running and Lloris is winding down.
And if either of them could integrate cheque book management with tactics and squad development they'd be great.

The only part of what you’ve mentioned that I don’t really agree with is the Son part. His form has been shit since the start of the season, for large parts it we had a fit and eager Richarlison. But rather than Son getting dropped we saw Richarlison playing on the right side, a side he hasn’t played a whole lot on, and isn’t his best to say the least.

That in my eyes does come down to Conte

I think in the early few weeks of the season the Son form wasn't such an issue. He often had bad games here and there and I suspect most of us thought that's all it was.
The big test is when everyone is fit, does Conte drop him. At the moment he's a hindrance not an asset.

I was very much Conte in as I hoped he’d show us how well he can improve the present squad and be a draw for top players to join us. I knew the football wouldn’t be great, but was willing to forego that for a jump in points gained.

But, I’ve been disappointed so far. Our league position is probably par for the size of club we are and the finances we have. That would be fine if the football wasn’t so eye gougingly bad.

I’m not sure I’ve seen a jump in performance from any player so far, in fact the biggest move in form I’ve seen is Son going from world class to League Two.

Added to this is Conte’s attitude that seems to be he is above us and we should be damn lucky to have him. And his protracted contract situation.

He needs to get his act together. And soon.

if Son was in any kind of form this season we would be a much better team (maybe as good as end of last season), but would the coumter attack be what we want ?

Conte with a full week of prep for the goons and an almost fully fit squad.

Fuck all the noise, the signal remains the same, we have an elite manager and a squad of big characters that respond well to him when the pressure is on.
Squad of Big characters ? Who would that be exactly then ? When the pressure has been on , when did they respond ?

Apart from one or two , I see a squad full of players that are past it and players that are no way near the level for us to compete.

Are we talking about a different team here ?

They lost a member of the coaching staff this year and played their best in the game straight after.
The Leeds game when they blatantly fouled Bentancur to take the lead late in the second half, then Bentancur scored twice to win it.
Kane’s robbed goal by VAR in the champions league then going to win in Marseille.
Come back from 2 down more times in a season than I can remember. Granted they kept fucking up by going behind.

Good one. On the surface we can all say the quality of football has been shit but when you drill down into it there’s a reason why we aren’t playing well (like the second halves to villa away and Newcastle at home last season) and it is down to injuries and loss of form of Son.

Son scored over 20 goals last season and we’ve lost those in the team. That would hurt any side massively. You could say we’ve done as well as we have to keep our heads above water considering. Richarlison and his injuries have exacerbated this problem because he hasn’t been able to be dropped.

Matt1882 to your point around Son's form, I do think Conte isn't without blame.

He works with him every single day and must have some sense of the why. Players don't drop off a cliff to the extent we are seeing with Son. If he is knackered then it is on Conte to drop him and give him time out. If it is tactical then address that.

It is easy to say it isn't Conte's fault, it is the player(s) but if that is so why do we need a £15m per year coach?

I was wondering the same about training. If his form has dropped off so much in games then surely in training it’s the same?

Depends. The vibes are probably completely different between training and games. And that could impact his performance. He could very well be training like normal but now that he is a golden boot winner the pressure is getting to him at game time?

Like, Kane is meant to be great at free kicks in training, but we all know how he performs them when the cameras are rolling.

I can’t imagine the hard line his father takes is helpful in this moment either. He probably needs to go home and switch off from football and not be threatened with a hundred lashes if he can’t do a thousand keepy uppies in his sleep.

well, not sure that this thread is the right place...
but he surely is person who is most responsible of our results... so...

It makes MY SHIT BOIL to see that in Carabao cup, the LAST FOUR TEAMS STANDING are -
SOUTHAMPTON
NOTTINGHAM
NEWCASTLE
MAN UNITED

Do you fucking see it ?!?

After eliminiating us, Nottingham has had to beat Blackburn and Wolves and are now 3 games from lifting a trophy.

But we could not turn up against them, could we.
Cause we have so many trophies from recent past.
For fuck sake.

The problem with/for Son is that there is no one else. Even if he has been dismal in training too, Richarlison, Kulu and Moura all being out has meant a very off colour Son has HAD to play. The only possible alternative would have been to play Perisic on the left of the front three, but the knock on effect there is that Sessegnon would have to play and he's been pretty crap.

Once Richarlison and Kulu are both fit they will allow Son to be dropped or possible drive him to improve.
Sometimes just the threat of losing your place is enough to make you do more.

We'd of ended up losing to Utd or Newcastle anyways
