So what would happen if WE wanted another year and HE didn’t?

It would never work and he knows it
Well, we could technically extend it and he would walk and then there would be a bit of a bunfight over compensation and whatnot. But would be very churlish to get into that situation.

I expect the aim of a clause like that is to give a bit of confidence to both sides of the contract and try and create good faith.

Yes exactly so if Conte has his heart set on returning to Italy in the Summer that’s what will happen whatever we say

I think we have a midfield 3. As you say, Bissouma to sit deep and the PEH and Betancur to progress/defend as needed. In fact, add in Skipp as cover and I think it's the one area where we do have reasonably good players to call on.

I'm not accepting that Bissouma is shit. Not having it. We watched him play at Brighton. He's good. Needs confidence and time.
I dunno mate.

I don’t think Bissouma is a 6/DM. He’s a box to box 8. Not defensively aware enough for a DM.

Then Hojbjerg/Skipp/Bentancur are all hybrid 6/8s that can only really play in a 2 man midfield in a team that counterattacks.
None of them are mobile enough/good enough on the ball/creative enough to run a 3 man midfield in a 4/3/3. Just my opinion.

Skipp DM with any of 2 of the other 3 unleashed box to box could work IMO

I guess. But where’s he going in Italy? Not Juve.

I could see him at PSG at some point, although considering their desperation for the CL, might not be the best fit.

Not really that many jobs paying 15 million a year in a nice European city!

Really?

Never seen him as box to box. He’s not a marauder. Just a very tidy, competent 6/8. Just have to look at a player like that and think he has everything required to succeed in a 3.

But we seem to buy more

Ndombelly
Lo Celso etc
Tbh, I actually wouldn’t place Ndombele and Lo Celso in the Emerson, Sessengnon, Gil, Sarr bracket of cheap dud/punt options.
They were a very rare occasion where the club actually didn’t cheap out and went and got two of our top targets, they just didn’t work out for varying reasons.

Ndombele and Lo Celso were two players who signed for the club mainly because of Pochettino. He gets sacked and they have to spend two years under a washed Mourinho, Mason and Nuno before finally getting someone competent in Conte.

In Lo Celso’s case, he’s been very good everywhere he’s been, is one of Argentina’s most important players and he was one of our candidates for player of the season in his first season under Poch/Mourinho (a fact people conveniently forget very often).

What I’m saying is, I don’t think they should be used as a stick to beat down the idea of spending big bucks on top targets as some insist on doing. It’s a very flawed argument and view point.

Fair enough

My main point is that we’re stuck with deadwood who either aren’t capable footballers or don’t want to be here

Nightmare situation and could only happen to us!

I like him there. Tracks runners well and sharp on the turn.
I think it comes down to what you want in a 6. Always thought it’s a bit of a made up position as you always need your midfield two or three to be hugely tenacious off the ball. I suppose you get 6s that really do make a point of dropping into the CB line (like a Witsel), and he’s obviously not that.

Here’s what I want in a 6. Someone that never, ever, *ever* hides - his job is to make sure that anyone in the back line has a simple pass available to progress the ball.

And that means receiving under pressure. All game long.

Agree with that and Skipp better than any of the others at that

Might sound mad, but if he signs an extension great, we can build on what we have. If he doesn’t, great, we can hit the reset button and hopefully get in a progressive manager. Just feel pretty meh towards the club atm, couldn’t be arsed to even try get a NLD ticket
