Manager Antonio Conte

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He played in 2 of the 3 losses to Chelsea. He played the full 90 minutes against Southampton and Wolves.
5 losses of which he played in 4.

He actually played 74 minutes against Leicester. Unbelievably, we initially got worse when he went off and went 2-1 down before sorting out self out and winning 3-2
We got worse because we took him off and put the Argentina version on.

Conte will have seen the cowardly performance against Wolves and how we totally lost the midfield. He won't risk that again.

Wishful thinking.

Obviously he's gonna play a part at some point, we only have 4 midfielders.

While I agree with your sentiment, 3 matches in a week is always going to require rotation and if we're being honest, Burnley away suits a Winks start far more than Leeds away.

Burnley will sit back even at home which plays into Winks' loan "quality" (recycling possession). Leeds, on the other hand, will press us and we all know Winks folds under any pressure.

Fair point. But putting in Spurs' self appointed media liaison against a bunch of shin kickers like Burnley is a big risk. They will target him. Then again every team targets him.

Same starting 11 for me as a reward for the City game and just make earlier subs. If we are a couple goals up then bring on Harvey White. Burnley away will put hairs on his hairs.

Depends if a game means more to you than your wife, pretty poor comparison really for me. Love my wife, dont want to live without her, dont LOVE footy and sure as hell can live without it.

Antonio Conte has spelled out the “psychological work” he has been performing on his Tottenham players in a bid to turn them from trophyless near-missers into serial winners. The main lesson he has been trying to hammer home to his stars is that they need to “suffer” whenever they lose.

Otherwise they are liable to fall into runs like the three successive Premier League defeats they had suffered before the weekend.

Saturday, or course, was very different with the 3-2 win over Manchester City at the Etihad and unsurprisingly the club’s Enfield training ground has been buzzing ahead of the trip up to Burnley.

But Conte says he needs to feel a very different vibe when the result is a bad one - otherwise he fears his players are not “feeling” it enough.

It is the secret, he insists, to the sort of winning mentality that has seen his own career as a player and a manager littered with silverware.

“You have to suffer …. if you don’t suffer, it means that you don’t want to improve your winning mentality,” he said.

“The situation has to be different when you win and when you lose.

“Otherwise if the atmosphere is always the same and it’s always joy and celebrations, I think it will be very difficult to install the right mentality, the winning mentality, in a team. I repeat – always in a balance.

“We lost two games against Wolverhampton and Southampton and then we won against City.

“The first step to change your mentality is after a loss … you have to understand that you lost a game.

“That is different and for sure the atmosphere has to be different.”

Tottenham, he feels, are slowly beginning to get the message but at the most successful teams in Europe the impact of defeat is much more noticeable.

“When you are in a club that is used to winning, what happens when they lose?” he said. “For example, Bayern Munich. They were dominating this season in Germany and then they lost 4-2 in the league at Bochum and then they had a 1-1 draw in the Champions League at Red Bull Salzburg.

Romano claims Conte rubbished idea he wanted to leave Tottenham

Fabrizio Romano has shared on The Here We Go Podcast what Antonio Conte told the Tottenham Hotspur squad ahead of the Manchester City clash in the wake of the surprise interview he gave which led to speculation surrounding his future.

Conte only joined Tottenham in November. And he would have been aware that turning their fortunes around may not be a simple task. However, it did appear that things were not going to plan.

Spurs had lost their previous three Premier League games. And the team who then lay ahead for Conte and Tottenham was Manchester City. For many, four top-flight defeats in a row looked inevitable.

The last thing Tottenham probably needed was for an interview with Conte to then emerge in which he seemed to be critical of what the club did during the January transfer window. Reports subsequently claimed that Mauricio Pochettino was being lined up should Conte walk away.

‘This what he told the team’

Outside doubts over his future were emphatically put to bed at the weekend however. Tottenham produced a stunning display to beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Spurs still have work to do clearly. But the victory whetted the appetite for what is to come from the club in the coming years. And judging by what Conte reportedly told the Tottenham squad before the win, the Italian is absolutely determined to be a success in North London.

“Behind the scenes, what happened was that Antonio Conte, the day before Man City vs Tottenham game, he wanted to speak directly with the team. And he said this concept to the team: ‘I’m here to fight with you. I’m here to fight for you. And I’m not here to make interviews to make my way out of Tottenham. I’m focused on Tottenham’s project’,” Romano told The Here We Go Podcast.

“If he says these words, it’s because he wants to push the club to do something special in the summer, to sign important players in the summer, to show winning mentality as the players are doing and he is doing as always.

“And this what he told the team and squad before the game. He wanted the game with Man City to be the statement from the team.”

Conte will be just as desperate for reaction from Tottenham squad in upcoming games

There is absolutely no question that it was a remarkable result from Tottenham at the weekend. And it was a real statement from Conte.

However, getting the players motivated for a clash against Manchester City should not be the biggest challenge. Of course, Spurs did the double over the champions this season.

It is the games against the likes of Burnley, Leeds and Everton where Conte needs to see that ruthless side from Tottenham. On paper, they should have set their sights on nine points.

Picking up those points is going to be just as important for the rest of their campaign.
