Manager Antonio Conte

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

This Conte experiment is a massive waste of fucking time. He doesnt really want to be here. We arent going to buy the players he wants. The 1M raise is desperation. Trying to keep a man that isnt really bothered about the club and do everything except match his ambition.

Should have kept Poch all those years ago and threw him a few players instead.

Happy Christmas 😁

This the same Pitt-Brook that had everyone frothing a few days ago?

Oooh look... It is, y'know.

I wonder if "he is "really happy at the club" and has a "really good relationship" with the club." will gain the same degree of traction as his prior musings that contained zero sourced comments.

Yet it sounds like, from those comments, he doesn’t want to talk about a new contract now until the summer at least in public anyway. That is somewhat disappointing. Hopefully it is different behind the scenes and something is indeed being finalised or at least the option of another year taken up. I am not sure he has a better option than us in the summer anyway.

Erm ‘I’m really happy but don’t want to talk about contracts now despite mine running out in 6 months” is hardly going to inspire confidence in anyone.

At least they're literal soundbites; unlike the unqualified maybe-fest that the melts feverishly guzzled down.

.....Which of course is my only point here; it's not to suggest that Conte is guaranteed to sign.

Part of me didn't expect him to re-sign before the summer anyway; so I'm relatively sanguine about the situ.... Even if I would prefer it all done and dusted. This is what life under (eg) Bielsa is like.... It's not exclusive to us or Conte.

TBH my gut impression after seeing that interview was that...yeah, he's gone in the summer. Just gave me that vibe tbh.

That quote made me less sure he's staying though. And like you I couldn't actually give a fuck if he does stay or not, to be honest. But actions speak louder than words and repeatedly going "Yeah I'm totally happy!' while allowing a contract with 6 months left to tick down screams a bit of PR work to me.

Have any very happy managers just allowed their contract to totally run down? Legitimate question, wondering if there are any examples of this. Usually they sign with a year or two left to go. Seems to me like Conte either has no interest in staying or is keeping Levy on his toes.

He probably is genuinely happy here but wants to pressure the club into changes or signings before committing to a contract extension. If he signs now he loses all leverage.

He's hardly gonna come out and sign a new contract before the end of January. They guy is trying to put pressure on the club to match his ambitions and the majority of this fanbase. He's also not gonna say this openly in the media so to say he's gonna stay until the end of the season is completely reasonable in my view.

When do any other managers feel a need to do this though? I’ve never known a manager to run his contract down entirely just to play chicken with the owners.

If he was loving life here I doubt he’d be doing this. And frankly the instability it causes isn’t great. How is the club meant to fully invest in him when he’s saying we’ll talk contracts when he has no time left on it?

Counter argument is he signs a new deal then the club don’t back him. He may just be holding Levy’s feet to the fire in a I will sign once you have gotten me 2-4 players I want.

I'd like him to stay; I'm just content to patiently wait out any 'power games'.....

......Afterall. wasn't this all part of glee about Conte being the man to "Kick Levy's ass" and "hold Levy's feet to the fire" yadda yadda?

It seems more than a little contradictory for one (not you) to now bemoan his approach.

Yes; I literally gave one in my last post.

Conte isn't shy of kicking up a public fuss if he feels the need (see above "ass kicking" and many of his pressers at past clubs), so until such a thing transpires I'm happy to assume it's the latter and he's playing his hand in a way that best suits him.

Your example was Bielsa. A nutter who suits smaller clubs or national teams. And even then it usually ends in tears very quickly.

What top tier managers have ran their contracts down entirely at clubs and then signed one? Has that ever happened?
