He wasn't very bad but he struggled against explosive players. Good at ball carrying and passing, agreed. Defensive instincts good too, but sometimes attackers just had that brutal pace that he had no response to.
Corluka was slowing than me but still one of my fave players!

Xavi came on for him and changed the game
Don’t think he changed the game , we dominated the ball really all the way up to the 85th minute we got back into the game in the first half score wise but their goals were against the run of play. Xavi just gave us an extra body around the box rather than deeper as Brighton were getting deeper and turning over the ball more as the game went on.
Bentancur played well. He plays the game at his own pace, maybe people see that as a plodder but he’s deceptively mobile and has good feet. Feels like we’ve decided he was going to be shit before the game. Frank rates Bentancur by all accounts, and rightly imo. He’s never going to start Gray over him regularly. Quite honestly Gray needs to improve a hell of a lot.
He definitely plays the game at his own pace, even if that’s not the pace of the game

One of the reasons we are creating fuck all, whilst still conceding good chances is this guys plodding in and out of possession.
He can handle the ball under pressure. He’s fairly two tooted. He’s got long strides that cover the ground well. he’s a good player not one of the best but good. We dominated the midfield and possession today. we worked the ball into forward areas and had plenty of overloads and crossing opportunities. Lacking quality in the final third more than anything.
Was more in response to saying Gray done more in ten minutes than him. Also remember you rating Capoue and Tom Carroll and not rating Dembele so I would hold back on the lols
There’s a difference between not rating Dembele and not thinking he was as brilliant as some others. A nuance beyond your scope I guess.
We got mullered by Bournemouth because players like Bentancur (Palhinha/Sarr/Johnson) can’t play through pressure - there was much less pressure today - we haven’t been moving the ball through midfield well all season - and we still weren’t getting our forwards into good enough situations or creating overloads much at all.
There is no deception in Bentancur’s mobility. He lacks it. There is nothing he does exceptionally well. Nowhere near dynamic enough to play in a PL midfield, nowhere near pressure resistant enough, his passing is perfunctory.
Even the first goal, if he has any wit or craft about him he plays Bergval clean through with a reverse pass, instead it ends up - via two more passes - going out to Odobert on the edge of the box.

Bentancur gives us that calming influence in midfield. Xavi came on for better attacking impetus but that doesnt mean Bentancur didnt play well
yea 100%. his first touch was also a bad one for that, his ball to odobert was also a poor ball that forced odobert to go back to him, then his ball to kudus wasnt great either... that move was salvaged by odobert and richy.

Had several really impressive sequences like this when we did manage to play some football.
Going to be hard for Frank to leave him out for Bentancur pretty soon.
Thought he did well today, like to see him get another start in midfield next week against Bodo.
Thought he was excellent tonight playing further forward. Keeps the ball well and can actually pass.
