Player Ben Davies

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

The sort of player great teams have in the squad. Reliable, professional and does a good job much more often than not.

Yes he's had some slips but he's never claimed to be world class.

Certainly would be happy to have him as 5th CB and 3rd LB for another season.

Astonishingly for a 'squad' player who has not usually been an 'automatic' starter (except due to injuries to others), although under Conte playing a back 3 he often was, Ben Davies has now made 336 appearances making him our 23rd in our list of players with the most appearances.

His next milestones to overtake include Darren Anderton's 351, Alan Mullery 355, Paul Allen 358, Danny Blanchflower 360, Cliff Jones 360, Mike England 362, Jermain Defoe, 363, Aaron Lennon 364, Eric Dier 365 so he's in a bunch of top professionals, no matter whether he overtakes some of them or not

He's also made 90 appearances for Wales, captaining them from time to time, as he has done for Spurs half a dozen or so times, and again surprisingly is well inside our top 10 appearance maker in euroopean competitions with some 75 appearances in europe for Spurs.

So overall he's now one of our most experienced players, but he'll be aged 32 by summer 2025, and at the end of his contract.
.
He won't be easy to replace a player capable of doing a job as either LB or LCB and indeed providing leadership on the field, whether captain or not. I guess we'll look at who is available in the summer - but it might not be the worst decision in the world to ask Ben to extend his contract for a year or two.

I was thinking it maybe the club looking for a younger, faster option as opposed to Daddy Davies wanting out.

I think he’s still got enough to offer to be worth keeping.

We will see how it goes.
But I doubt it honestly. We will have Vuskovic joining us finally next summer anyway.
Would not be surprised if he'd be ahead of Benny in both CB and LWB consideration. But even if so - why not keep a capable role model professional for bit longer.

I mean his very good anticipation in tackle did help us to score against (and beat) current Champions League leader.
After he came in to and during his minutes on the pitch helped to keep current English Champions and 2023 CL winners on 0 goals too...

I mean that ain't too shabby, is it :D ?

Appreciation for him has really grown over the years. Tbh under Poch I felt the “reliable, hard working” descriptions were lazy white UK stereotypes because he was prone to a lot of errors and poor positioning. But he’s really improved as an overall player since Conte and is really a valuable player to have. These versatile players who can help you in a bind get results are crucial.

Maybe it’s more of a thing in the US. But white, national born athletes, that often aren’t that athletic get the lazy stereotype (as in the stereotype is lazy, not the player) that they are hard working, do the fundamentals, coach’s son, team player, etc.
Do you mean there aren't any black footballers like Ben Davies who are basically good solid professional players but are rarely great?

I think we would have got him signed up if we were going to keep him. Anyway, he’s been such a good player for us why not let him go on a free, get himself a good deal. I’m still surprised the likes of Ioswich did not come in for him , would have been a great signing for them. Possibly did but we knocked them back.
Ben isn’t really suited to a left back role under Ange but does a good job at centre back.
