Player Brennan Johnson

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

the pitch is too small for him to be effective, lacks the brain and elegance on the ball. if the pitch was 25 meters longer and 15 meters wider he might have a chance. you could just imagine what hed be like in short sided football like 7 and 5 a side. i think VDV is more graceful on the ball and hes a 6 foot 3 CB.

Ange has decades of experience coaching and sees him every day in training.

Elements of the Tottenham fan base wrote off Gareth Bale.

I’ll go with coaches over reactionary fans.
So you've NEVER had a strong negative opinion over a Spurs player because if the coach is picking him, it must be you in the wrong - this is logically the implication from what you wrote here, is it not?

Anyone slagging others off for speaking the truth about Johnson - this is a forum and a player thread is for discussion about that player. Nobody is booing the lad in the stadium or calling him a cunt ffs they are just talking about his performances which are awfull.
100% agree.

Don’t like scapegoating players or nastiness but there’s nothing wrong with reasoned, balanced criticism on this kind of platform. There’s a section of modern football fandom that seems to think if you have a response outside of all holding hands and singing kumbaya you aren’t a true fan.

I’ll reply to both at once.

Crowny - taken in isolation it is an appeal to authority. Clearly managers aren’t always right.

For both of you, you can see in this thread that any attempt to explain Johnson’s positives is responded to emotionally and without any “reasoned, balanced criticism”.

I think for our own players we should be able to admit that Johnson is fast (he’s one of the fastest players in the league) and that he is useful in transitions. There are people in this thread denying basic positives.

When you get to the point that you can’t show any balance about one of our own players then they might as well play for Woolwich.

He’s best suited coming on as a sub against tired legs. It’s disappointing for the price, but there’s a role for him. Hope Ange makes the change sooner than later before Brennan loses all confidence.

Sweet Jesus we’re still talking about Bale.

I still wouldn't be surprised if Ange starts him again next game. Ange seems to have so much faith in him but I can't get why. Or does he want him as a scapegoat if things don't go as planned?

I've now seen people compare Johnson to Bale and claim that he's better than Nico Williams

All on this forum and within the last couple of weeks

And what's worse is I think both posters are deadly serious

I have to live in the same world as these people , best argument I can think off for becoming a hermit

We paid a hefty price for him ,an amount that could be expected to get a player to come in and improve the team more or less straight away .Instead we got a lad quite far removed from that so it's no surprise a lot of people are questioning him as he has been largely underwhelming on the pitch .Hopefully he turns it around and comes good he also should not be given abuse in any shape or form .

Johnson clearly had some good moments last season, primarily as an impact sub. This left him with a decent set of goals/assists stats and enough to be hopeful that his (very) obvious weaknesses could be ironed out over time.
This is still the case but it's been a horrible start to the season for his mission to be a true 1st 11 starter for us moving forwards. The positive is that he seems to be more committed in his pressing/tackling but his unassuredness on the ball - of course the most crucial aspect for his position - has been worse than ever in these 1st 2 games and this vs poor oppostion. There was a moment at Leicester when he (impressively) won the ball back and had the whole wing in front of him and he just stopped his run and passed back. 23 is not young in football terms anymore, he should have a lot more confidence at this age.
For you, he gives you mini glimpses of Bale. For me, he is much closer to a player like Sessegnon - just way too timid and lacking confidence. We are competing for the top 4 in the Premier League, what we're seeing from him is nowhere near good enough and crucially he doesn't appear to be progressing.

sickening that they paid less for diaz.
You can't hit with them all. What about the bargain we did on current players like Vicario? Or Udogie anf VDV? World class players which was great value for money.

Whether Johnson will be a hit or miss, is too early to conclude, but as a poster over commented, most fans probably expected a more dominant player, given the price tag. Slagging him off is certainly not going to help, and also too early to give up on him.

And yes, he has some unquestionable skills, but at current form also some glaring weak sides to his play. But then again, we don't have a lot of good alternatives
