Ex-Spurs Player Brennan Johnson

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I’ll be forever grateful to him for Bilbao, and he seems like a truly top bloke.

But, this is 100% the right decision from the club. He is not, and will never ever be good enough for where we should be as a football club.

To anyone questioning this, the calibre of clubs interested should tell you all you need to know. That is his level, not a Champions League club.

Also, it has to be said that frankly this is something that would NEVER have happened under Daniel Levy. Ever.
He would have haggled, and dithered, and pondered until Palace et al got pissed off and ultimately didn’t sign him. Or else, we would have sold him on deadline day with no replacement, after getting the 42.5 million that Daniel wanted instead of 35 million. Utter bolloxology tactics, after years of which is a big reason we are in the mess we are currently in.

I for one am very pleased with how this appears to be playing out. Take the money, move on, improve the squad.
It signals that maybe, just maybe, change is afoot in how we will operate .
Until we drop the 35m on some Bryan Gil type player

If we are aiming for top 4 within 18 months and working towards a starting 11 who could be said to have that quality then Johnson isn't going to be one of those 11 players. I am not sure if we currently have more than 1 or 2 players who would actually fit that criterion, and we certainly don't have the manager.

If we need a squad of 22, with all the homegrown aspects, and if players accept they won't always start, then Johnson, used in the right manner might have been player 21 or 22. Maybe.

I think Johnson's likely departure could easily be applied to half a dozen of our squad, so let's see how this plays out, but if it's just an unfavoured player being told they can move on, and is not twinned by incomings of objectively higher quality, it's pointless.

Remember, we may have agreed a deal with Palace but once Johnson see's their training facilities in Beckenham he will no doubt turn it down. We basically knocked down better facilities than Palace have now. He will no doubt want a pay rise to somewhere around 120k a week which will smash their current highest earner Daichi Kamada (105k). Fair play to him if he does put playing ahead of money but very few players do that nowadays.
There's no way they had bid without having encouragement that he would at least consider moving to them. No club would bid without first knowing whether the player would be interested in a move and have a rough idea of wages required.
Assume he's taking his time as there's other clubs interested so why not hear them out as well

I’m probably in the minority here but I would have kept him and see what the next manager does with him , the way I see it is when as a club we are paying £40 million for Tel , selling your Premier league proven goal scorer who was out top scorer last season for £35 million is a cracking bit of business for Palace!

This one feels to me like a clash of personalities. BJ isn't amazing but he isn't the worst player on our books by a long stretch and he scores a lot of goals.
We are also losing money on him.

I cant see why he has been frozen out.

It's an odd one and does look Spursy to be selling the top scorer from last season for less than we bought him for.

If he hits it off somewhere else I suspect people will look back at this as a bad and baffling piece of business by Spurs

The worrying thing for me is this signals that the Vinai etc are all fully on-board the Frank train and are willing to get rid of anyone he doesn’t want ……..

I just think its indicative of the clubs ambition. This feels like a "sell to buy" move. And losing money on a guy who was your top scorer has to be go down as laughable business for any club...

What worries me is that nothing has changed with the direction of the club.

Getting £35m for Johnson would be amazing business in my opinion. Anyone who has watched him for Spurs knows by now what he offers, and outside of getting on the end of things it's not a lot. He's at the age now where I question if he will ever take the next step up, so I wouldn't hold my breath on him becoming anything more than what he is now.

Recoup some money on what I feel was a poor investment in the first place. I'm sure he will do an okay job for a middling team, but he is not Spurs quality. He needs to play on the counter and he needs a system which is built for him.

Thanks for the goals and thanks for being a good lad, but time to move on.
