Didn't this exact thing happen with Steve McManaman?

Not fun to lose a good player on a free, but this is hardly some unheard-of thing.

The Michael Owen departure wasn't too different either.

Scousers and some media making out this is Judas levels of deceit & betrayal.......... It's just not.

It's been an 'open secret' he's RM-bound for more than a year....... I bet the Liverpool higher-ups knew this too and, if anything, are just happy to sit back and let TAA take all the flack.

(*Which I'm fine with cos I think TAA is a bit of a tosser anyway.)

ENIC should really be doing this.

A club that wants to develop talent at scale, which Levy very much does, needs more places to develop them than one PL squad.

They should, but I'll maintain that I don't think ENIC (or Tavistock/Lewis) have any interest in sports.

It's my inclination to believe that Levy has the interest in football and used the 'ENIC' project that Joe hired him for as an angle to get into it. If Lewis has been downright reluctant to invest capital into this club, I can't see him being willing to buy another.

As Airfixx Airfixx points out, Levy had to sell Vicenza, Slavia Prague, and the 50% or so of AEK and Basel, plus the 25% of Rangers just to get the cash for Spurs. So they've been a multi-club project before, but DL had to scrimp the cash together to get spurs.

Realistically, it makes you wonder what plans there would or could be if some capital were freed up with investment, but I just don't get the feeling that the parent company has any ambitions for it.

Totally, but if the rules don't change (which they of course should), I doubt there will be any other Europe-contending PL teams that don't also own at least one farm team on the continent within a decade or so, and the greatest advantage will come to the first movers.

It's not about the narrow economics of owning a middling continental club, which are awful, it's about the benefit to Spurs, which is considerable, especially for an operation that wants to develop young talent and leverage bargains in the marketplace.

If ENIC means to continue owning the team (which they of course should not), I doubt they're going to be able to get away with NOT doing this for very long, everyone can see the advantages.

Sure. The alternative is the old partnerships. We used to have one with Standard liege (zeki fryers anyone). Not sure where those kinds of things went

Unless Salah and Van Dijk fall off a cliff, they are already the team to beat next season, if not for the next 2 or 3 seasons.

Slot may find next season harder than his first, but if he brings Liverpool title number 2, or takes the CL crown (quite possible), it will be one of the most impactful arrivals ever.

And I think Liverpool will buy at least one more player, if not 2.

Their transfer activity just exudes clarity and conviction.

Meanwhile..... tumbleweed closer to home.

By far the favourites for next season at present. Unsure how they’ll keep this level of spending up though.

Also, already looking like the Salah deal is leading to other players demanding as much. Was always going to happen. Same will happen here if Levy listens to the calls to just “pay the big wages, you bald cunt”. Plenty of wiggle room in our wage ratio, but shows the danger of just paying whatever.

True, but Salah had earned the right to demand the alleged amount. That is rarely the case, and in such instances it's far easy to talk of contribution, quality and longevity.

Liverpool did not have to offer the contract.

The same with us. If we are after players who have demonstrated their quality, then you have to offer a commensurate (not moneybreaking) wage.

We need to find and fund a way to something that resembles a squad that should genuinely compete.

Not sure the average player has the sense to take those things into account. He’ll just see what a top earner makes and tell his agent “me want”.

Maybe their modern-day Paisley. We'll have to see.

I hope not, but he just turned-up, delivered, and now they are seemingly grabbing their targets in double quick time.

You can never be sure how it pans out, but they are signing players at a good age, who are joining an experienced squad, which has 3 or 4 players who will absolutely show them the way.

I certainly see them well ahead of City and Woolwich at present. The one area I think they are short in is an out and out striker.
