Other teams just attack the ball so much better in the box than we do. Look at southamptons last 2 goals… when do we ever have late runners in the box like that? When it comes to crossing chances, we don’t have runners… We just have statues.
I think we have been attacking OK, specifically creating the chance, even last two games against Southampton and Wolves but again under 3-5-2 they look better, more varied and numerous.

But even those games where we've been outplayed under Conte we are attacking, nothing like the shite under Nuno and the dinosaur. Many chances are not finished off and the final ball just lacks the right weight or decision but there is a notable change, and in elements, we've been perhaps unlucky even if not deserving.

Our outside CBs are both encouraged to push fwd when possible...... Now I don't know for sure what action precedes these freeze-frames (that are merely 1 second apart!), but lets assume Davies was caught out of position when the oppo counter...... We have FIVE players further back than him (not counting the 3 on the 6yd box).... Is it not fair to expect at least ONE of them help provide some form of meaningful cover?

Seriously; bad clearance from Ben on goal #2, but singling him out here isn't really called for.
Rewatch the play if you're not sure which actions precede these stills.

IMO, Hugo is #1 at fault for this specific goal, but Davies (who gets a reputation for being an intelligent player) has a habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

May I present Ben Davies, Ben Davies getting dragged out of position, and the space where Ben Davies should be?

That being said, Hugo needs to catch that ball. Twice.
God in heaven the ball watching :contefacepalm:

Jesus Christ, is that Photoshop or something?

3 Spurs players inside our box to cover 5 Wolves players - while 6 Spurs players are standing outside the box?

The fuck?

This photo should be featured in “Defending for dummies” under “How NOT to defend”.
Also I have noticed in the past few games how narrow the defence is - they are almost bumping into each other. Completely disorganised and/or not capable of figuring out where to stand. We need Dier there to keep things in order.

Good post and agree.

Why do you think Conte is insisting on not playing 3 in the midfield? it absolutely baffles me.

I can only think that he wants everything to go through the wings going forward and having two holding midfielders and 3 at the back. Opponents would have to get through 5 bodies to get to goal.

It's good in theory with somebody like Skipp who will throw himself at anybody with no regard to his own safety. Even PEH isn't bad at it. But with our wingbacks and current midfield options we might as well have a red carpet between Kane and the defence. Bentacur can't be everywhere but he is going to have to be sadly.

Davies is just slack-jawed gawking on the entire sequence of both goals, jesus christ.

Sanchez is the only player who looks awake on both, to no particularly beneficial effect, but still.

Again; I'll take your word for it, but surely that again suggests something more positional going on.......?

Sorry that was me going back and watching the whole youtube highlight

Ok... Just watched it too.

Goal #1 - Davies had seconds before pushed out to shut down the long-shot from Nevez, so yeh his starting position is further out than the 5 stood doing nothing on the edge of the box. Yet by the time the ball hits the net he's about 7 yards out and everyone else remains at least 15 yards out still.

Goal #2 - Crap clearance. Chases back in afterwards. By the time the ball hits the net he's about 6 yards out. 1 of 6 men that were that far back. Dav's block unluckily deflects back off of Emerson.

.....Neither goals is he just stood scratching his arse.

Goal #1 Villains: 1. Hugo 2. The sleeping 5.
Goal #1 Villains: 1. Hugo/Ben 2. The ricochet.

Davies is playing as a centerback! He needs to be in the play when there’s danger in the box!

Especially on the second one where the eventual goalscorer runs right by him as he mopes back toward his position after giving the ball away.

I don’t mean to single him out, but beyond being lazy and unfocused which the whole team was, Davies is adding a lack of understanding of what position he’s playing.

And it’s 6 minutes into the game! No fatigue involved. It’a just an organizational mindset that there’s no individual responsibility and someone else is going to clear the ball.
There’s a yin to that yang too. “Someone else is going to clear the ball” but also, “I can’t trust my teammates to do their jobs so I better break the shape to cover this threat”

Both breed uncertainty and uncertainty is poison for defending.

We’d been pretty decent at this under Conte and suddenly became a mess from the instant of kickoff against So’ton. It’s bizarre.

I've already had this convo a few posts back, but if you're committed and there are FIVE other bodies back it's not much to ask to expect one of them to drop in and help provide meaningful cover.

Maybe one of the other fuckers should have engaged Nevez instead, but at least Ben was doing SOMETHING when others weren't.

He's not "moping" back at all.

The bad pass alone is enough to attribute 'villain' billing; why lay it on thick for the fuck of it?

I don’t mean to single him out, but beyond being lazy

Ball moves faster than man... You do realise that?

You’re accusing me of singling him out when I’m not. Winks also lets Dendonker ghost in right past him for the second, it’s all shit.

But just 30,000 foot view, first principles, we’re in a back 3, defending in the final third, first thing, where are the 3 CB’s, are they connected and engaged and forming a defensive line.

Lloris sends Davies into no man’s land with the pass then he doesn’t recover quickly enough to fix his poor clearance.

Winks does nothing, Bentancur is late, Romero doesn’t read the danger, it’s all shit. But start from the most basic and work your way outward from there.

Since Davies is so bad at attacking, then surely he must be a great defender...is the reason why some think he is any good. They forget how he makes at least 1 big chance almost every game for the other team. In reality he is rubbish with and without the ball.

Lloris didnt help matters in the last game, but with davies is an almost every match thing. Unfortunately our manager wants to play 3 CBs when we have 1 or maybe 2 decent ones.
