Player Cristian Romero

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He is like any defender in that he will slip up now and then, and he can be rash at times, but the number of reds he actually gets is low considering how he plays. His passing from the back is vital to how we move the ball, and his timing when he steps in to win it early is something plenty of others would love to have. He is strong, reads the game well and wins challenges that stop trouble before it starts. Out of everything that needs fixing in this side, he is nowhere near the top of the list.

He often chooses which moments in which days. There were times yesterday where he was so sloppy and careless I was screaming at the telly. Then other times in the same game he steps up with two outstanding goals.

Europa League Final Romero was a warrior. We just need him switched on more often.

The issue there is that "warrior" Romero isn't necessarily "competent defender". Some games he's just got that South American fire in him and will be kicking and riling up players when we need him to not get a yellow card

I agree he should show up more.

But I also truly believe that it must be so disheartening for a player of his quality to look forward and see the dross he's had to watch for years. Over time it has to have an effect.

Stick him in a top side and I think there is little debate about him as a top 3 CB in world football. But we drag him down as a club.

I wonder whether Bruno’s goal celebrations got him all riled up ?

I think part of the enigma is that Romero is a better footballer than the average centre back, but I'm not so sure he's a better defender than the average centre back.

It's similar for VDV, though he has the get out of jail free card of his immense pace.

Our centre backs are two of the best football players in our squad, and yet we remain pretty shit at the back. Some of that is down to the dysfunctional team around them, and the keeper behind them. Some of it is due to the pair of them being somewhat overrated for attributes not entirely relevant to being a top quality centre back.

For me, as a pair they don't hold a candle to the Alderweireld/Vertonghen partnership, though that's an admittedly high bar to aim for.

Yet they both have greater outstanding attributes not normally found in a CB I would argue. Romero is a weapon offensively. And as you say, VDV's pace with and without the ball

They are are unquestionably the best two players in the squad.

Yea, he's a decent goal scorer for a CB and he seem to care more about scoring goals than actually defending. But he's not striker material and not even midfield material, so he was placed in a defensive position. Doesn't really fit there either. But because he has some qualities that most CB lacks, some people think he's a world class defender. But he simply isn't that good at it. If he was, one of the bigger clubs would've bought him.

Nah absolutely not. He isn't consistent enough to be a top three CB in the EPL let alone the world. Seriously this fan base are like goldfish. He is a wildly erratic player, he has let his team mates down just as much as they have him. Goes from great to ghastly and back again. He is however box office. But and im deadly serious we'd win more games with Guehi and VDV at centerback. Said this before and stand by it Romero is oddly a centerback wins you tournaments but not leagues.
