Player Cristian Romero

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Pretty good assessment of him, but don’t you think it is a big problem when we’re short of bodies and he’s getting himself suspended for a third of the season?
Obviously a problem. But a lot less of a problem for me than the other dozen or so chancers we see regularly who don’t even try when they hit the pitch.

I just think the way he’s been asked to play this season has had a massively detrimental effect on his form and his attitude. You’d wish, in a perfect world, that stuff like that wouldn’t affect somebody, but it must do.

I mean, he is the captain and is sitting it out in what is a relegation battle because he keeps getting suspended for doing dumb things.

Not really that harsh IMO
As I said, in comparison to the rest of the players. Romero hasn’t had a good season, but still one of our better players. Presently fourth in our very own Player Ratings thread.

Why haven’t the other players below this got a thread that’s on fire? That’s what I see as harsh.

I don’t think it’s controversial to expect more from the captain and that he should elevate the team rather than sabotage from within.

How many other players are being put on a pedestal and called world class while delivering abject and inconsistent performances?

Romero is very clearly marmite and that’s why he polarises views!

As I said, because they are the captain that has got themselves banned for 4 games during a critical period....

I’m not listening to the “world class” pish, because he certainly isn’t that. He is one of our better players and more consistent performers. Tough to argue against that, judging by our own player ratings on this site. Something that is constantly ignored by those who don’t rate the player.

He makes mistakes. He fucks up. He sees red at times - both in mind and card. But he at least gets fucking stuck in. I’ll take the rough with the smooth every time for a player like this. We need more of them in our side.

South American, big name signing, big price, 'defender of the year' etc., YT videos, World Cup, but mostly, being one of the dirtiest players in football today. Still amazes me how so many jump to defend the latest stupid, bad, overly aggressive challenge and the player who just doesn't stop letting the club down.

Ben Davies came from Swansea for fuck all money, not much fanfare and doesn’t try to hurt people on the pitch.

His thread in particular I think has the worst post rate for deserved actual recognition to what he's done at the club.

It's no good being "one of our better players" though if he's not available for selection for very critical phase in the clubs history - never mind season.

Aside from that, he's been making mistakes all season and, for me, has been hiding when other players (like Palhinha) have been setting a far better example for what leadership is (look how much shit Palhinha has been getting in his thread this season too - far more than this one).

Surely you can see the issue with "our own player ratings" when there's a bit of a cult behind him. There are people on here that think he's the next coming of Maldini

I like Ben Davies. Good player. Rarely lets us down. Rarely elevates us either. But a good player.

And I agree his contribution to the club should have the recognition of a longer thread.

As for defending Romero - I think he’s a good player, one of our best. I like he gets stuck in and I’ll take the odd red card as the cost of doing business. So not really that difficult for me to defend him.

It’s a shame he’s suspended yes. I think it’s a shame as I think he’s a good player. A lot of folk seem to think it’s terrible that he’s suspended whilst thinking he’s shite anyway. Not sure I see that logic.

Yep, Palhinha has been getting shit. I’ve no idea why that’s the case either. Top player. Dread to think where we’d be without his tackles.

As for a cult (I generally switch off at this word as it’s stupid beyond belief to use and annoys my fucking happiness, however, I’ll press on), might be the case. Fuck knows. The rest of the players seem to be where they should be on that list. Pretty sure Romero was near the top since he’s been here. I’d say the answer is he’s been pretty good, rather than there’s some shifty cult on the go spending their time fucking up our ratings thread.

There's a few people on here who I assume are argentine, and will swear the sky is lime green before they accept any criticism of the lad, so if it's not that phrase it's something near.

I'm not aware of any other player that has that level of "committed, unconditional, loyalty towards" him

Maybe so. Tend to skip read threads these days, so I may have to bow to your knowledge on this one. Let’s see how he gets on when he comes back. I’m hoping we see a reinvigorated Romero helping to pull us out of trouble. Think we need him. Happy to accept others don’t have that belief.

If it wasn't for Romero, we'd already be in the relegation zone this season. He's one of the few players who have shown any fight this season and has saved us with some important goals.

I agree. He has also cost us with errors though, so rough with the smooth. I’ve said before that he’s having a weaker season because he’s had an idiot as a manager. Hoping we see an improvement when his suspension is over.

As you say though, he’s shown fight and desire to win. Takes it too far at times, but I’d rather that than the couldn’t care less attitude of most of the rest of the squad.

I’ve not kept count, but I wouldn’t be surprised if those important goals are more than negated by the ones he’s been personally at fault for the other end.
I've kind of kept count. He only scored 4 this season.

Against Newcastle he scored 2. We got 1 point.
Against Burnley, he made 2 mistakes. Scored one. So without him we most likely win. We got 1 point. Romeros contribution -2.
Against West Ham. Horrific defending and liable for at least one goal.

So from the games where he scored we got 1 goal. But dropped at least.

So not even in the game where he scores he makes up for it. Then turn to the games where he just make mistakes and don't score.

It's pretty obvious that it's impossible for him to make up for it. And that through his mistakes he's costing us WAY MORE.

He must be liable for close to 10 goals this PL season. That equates to a lot of points in the league. Then there's the shitty attitude and lowering of the teams morale which in not really quantifiable.

One game left on his suspension. But he isn't out of the woods yet.

Romero is on 8 yellow cards as things stand. If he gets 2 more yellow within his next three games that's another 2 match ban. If he gets a third straight red that's a five match ban.

We really need him to be laser focused once he is back to playing.
