Player Dane Scarlett

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

They keep saying Danes first goal....he's scored one before hasn't he?....🤔

First goal in a competitive match for Spurs

But he's scored a number whilst out on loan in last 2 years, including 4 or 5 for Oxford in Championship this season which a couple of weeks ago made him joint highest scorer for Oxford with about 4 other players, so he has more experience than many on TFC have given him credit for.

He's more experienced in mens football (at Championship and L1) , and a year older, than Will Lankshear who scored at Galatasaray who looks to be going out on loan, leaving Dane as our List B (EL) and UI21 striker at Spurs for rest of the season.

As an 18 year old. Scarlett turns 21 in March.

It's all part of burnishing his legend so I'll allow it to a degree, but the notion that Kane was this overlooked, unwanted prospect has always been total fake news.

What IS true is that people thought that he was a second striker rather than the out-and-out 9 he always viewed himself as. But he was always on the radar.

He was generally a 2nd striker in Spurs youth and whilst on loan at Orient and Millwall but when his Leicester loan went wrong (he sat on their bench with James Vardy as the Leicester manager preferred another striker so Kane and Vardy didn't play) Kane returned to Spurs for a good 6 months and trained - I think Les Ferdinand was an u21 coach at the time and I suspect helped him change to being a striker, something made possible because he had physically developed his body at that time too.

So he suddenly transformed into being a main striker, and whilst AVB didn't give him too many chances, Sherwood started him in the last 7 PL matches he was Spurs manager, Kane scored 3 goals ...... so Poch inherited a striker who had shown he could score PL goals ...... and he went on from there.

The way Ange described the decision to end his loan last night, the plan was always to bring him back and give him a chance.

Wonder where Ali Gold and POK got their info the plan was to send him out on loan again?

Will be interesting to see what happens against Brentford because Richy clearly can’t play 90 mins yet

Son moved to CF and Mikey on LW, I would imagine. It’ll be more of the same unless his hand is forced by injury.

Delighted for him. He’s never really been given a chance with us with a first team around him. He could be one of those players that thrives playing with better players. Nice goal but I was more impressed with his touch for our second. Great awareness.

Absolutely made up for him, and please the club made the decision to bring him back and then crucially actually use him. I think he might need a partner up top against better oppo tho, so if Richy stays playing on the left that could work

If you go back a few pages you'll see I wrote I'd been told Danes big issue is he really ONLY wants to play for Spurs. He has struggled a bit to put it together elsewhere for this reason. I think he still isn't Scarlett prime, in that you can see his physical development( body shape ) is still in flux. Getting stronger more robust. But if anyone deserves a go at first team for sheer love of the club it's Dane. He's basically one of us obsessed nutters.

Its quite common to bring back a player whose loan has not been ideal despite the quality of the player - which accurately describes Scarlett loan at Oxford where despite lack of game time he was joint equal top scorer for the season to date with 4 or 5 goals alongside about 3 or 4 other players last month.

I think Allie Gold and POK leapt to the conclusion he would be re-loaned out as Lankshear has done ok as a back up striker (although not played enough) and the assumption was he would stay at Spurs - and not enough game time for both.

Ange has looked at the 2 of them and made the perfectly rationale choice that Scarlett after loans for 2 years is much more experienced in playing mens football now (over 90 appearances - albeit only maybe 20 or 30 starts mostly L1 and Championship) including about 18 for Spurs in all competitions and has scored 10 goals in L1 or Championship, plus Scarlett has been quite prolific in England age groups including E u21's.

Scarlett is a year or so older than Lankshear and physically is more muscular - although Lankshear is now quite a unit, Scarlett is close to a full grown man.

So whilst I think Lankshear has huge potential, his experience of playing mens football is very modest - maybe 10 matches for Spurs first team and in u21's playing in EFL Trophy v L1 and L2 sides.

Roll forward 2 years and its not clear whether Scarlett or Lankshear will look the better striker, but right now, Ange has bet on the more experienced Scarlett, and its a rationale decision - even though I hoped Lankshear would get more playing time at Spurs this season.

Based on what we’ve seen of both, I agree with Ange.

Tbh I wouldn’t be against Dane starting a PL game whereas Will looks like he’s chasing it a bit in men’s football right now. Dane is just a bit more experienced and composed.

I think he should be given a chance. His positioning and movement is very intelligent and as his goal showed if you play to how he needs you to play and can pick him out I think there's a good goalscorer there. Looks to have grown a bit and the ajayi goal shows you can play off of him too.

...And this ffrom an Oxford Utd fan btl Graun today:

Could I just say, as an Oxford United fan, that Dane Scarlett's loan spell with us was not disappointing as the writer suggests. He made a positive difference to us, scored some vital and very good goals, played well, was always keen and hard working. For some reason that none of us fans can understand he didn;t get as much playing time as he should have done and spurs took him back when they had an injury crisis. I am glad he scored for you and I wish him well but I wish he had stayed with us.

They liked him a lot

Thanks for posting that.

I saw similar on Oxford fans forums during Scarlett's stay at Oxford, fans didn't understand why he wasn't playing more.

The managers favoured forward (Harris - more of a winger/striker than striker) when Scarlett first went there was starting so only a few mins at end of game for Dane, then Scarlett scored for E u21's and Harris was not fit for a couple of games allowing Scarlett to start more regularly, and score, but manager gradually went back to his favoured forward.

Yet go back a few weeks and Scarlett, Harris and 2 others were all on 4 or 5 goals so joint top scorers yet Scarlett had played much less than the others.

Its so difficult to know how much playing time loanees will get when they go on loans, even when they are performing reasonably well as Scarlett was. So pleased Dane scored last night - will have done his confidence no end of good
