Defoe vs top 4

As a finisher, Defoe is insanely overrated. I'm always hearing about him being a natural finisher but he's absolutely fucking dogshit at 1 on 1s. The best finishers tend to gobble up those chances. He snatches at so many chances, very frustrating player to watch who won't start for a better team than us.

However, given our options up front, I wouldn't be averse to seeing him start next week.

Agreed.

I can see the benefits of Windy's formation but if VDV and Lennon start with Bale as a front 3 then the only way that will work in an attacking sense is with Bale as the CF. If not I can see us just playing far too deep with no easy "out" when we are being pressured in our own half.

VDV naturally drifts back into the middle to get involved and is frequently deeper than Modric, Lennon can be given a free role to pop up left or right and Bale has noticeably spent a lot more time in the middle of the pitch when Adebayor comes on to the wing, it's almost as though he wants to play CF anyway.

Personally I would love to see Bale as the most forward player if only to give the defenders something to worry about in regards to his pace and not giving him space to run into for the long ball over the top.

Defoe would probably ask to leave if this happened, but I almost wish Redknapp would almost play with no one up top for that game. (In an ideal world where Sandro and Parker are fit)

---------------------Friedel------------------------
Walker-------Kaboul-----------King----------Ekotto
---------Sandro------Modric-------Parker----------
---------Lennon-------VdV--------Bale------------

Fluid front 3 (+Modric) given licence to roam and go nuts.

Realistically it will be Parker and Modric in the middle, with Lennon right, Bale left, vdV helping in midfield behind Defoe.

I think it would be crazy to play with VDV as a lone-ish striker against City. They'll press us, no doubt about it, and our ability to hit them on the break will be fundamental.

VDV, as fantastic a player as he is, is not the fastest lad around. We need Defoe to play to stretch them. I understand, and agree with the criticisms against him, but he's a shed load better than Pav, and has at least been scoring this year.

He won't be playing the lone striker. effectively we'd be solid in the middle and fluid moving forward from deep. Only problem is its untested.

When United were at their best with a front three of Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez, they effectively did this.

--Tevez-----Ronaldo------Rooney---

All 3 were so deep and then just broke at lightning pace. Problem I suppose is VdV is no Ronaldo

In fairness, all three could be considered strikers, or at the very least prolific goal scorers.

Of our attacking trio, none could be considered strikers. I don't think the comparison is appropriate.

It was only a few weeks ago that the podcast were asking the question "VDV or Defoe?". Defoe looks sharp and has been in goal scoring form. Play him up front with VDV just off him against City.

He's scored away against City before (3.14) but was substituted 5 minutes later and then sold :defoe:

I know it's only youtube, but christ, it's easy to forget how man beauts Defoe's scored. That's a more impressive video reel than a lot of the strikers i've seen us linked with

Scorer of great goals, not a great goal scorer.

He's a very talented player, but he doesn't read the game well (or quickly) enough. If he was less selfish I'm convinced he would have been an amazing support striker - his finishing from range is lethal - but as it is he'll always be a 'nearly' kind of player.

Nearly a fantastic striker, but his hold up play isn't good enough and he's always bloody offside.

He's had a good season though so far. He's poor as a lone striker though, which is a massive shame. Lets hope he steps up his game for City

Defoe is wank lol but after Ade all our striking options are pretty much wank hence last seasons numbers. Maybe I'm being overly harsh on Defoe but I'd never play him in a big match against a top team as he rarely if ever shows up. He's just not a very team good player for me and in matches were you're not likely to see as much possesion as usual you don't want him losing the ball or picking the wrong option damn near everytime he gets it. All that natural finisher stuff is aload of bollox too. I'd move Bale CF with VDV playing off him and bring in Pienaar or Kranky on the left two guys who know how to keep possesion. Pienaar probably has a better workrate to help out defensively but Kranky has a better shot and is more creative in the final third. Harry will start Defoe though unless we hopefully have a new striker by then fingers crossed. If he does start I hope to eat these words infact I hope they're crammed down my throat.

Anyone who doesn't like JD can fuck off and die. Love the little man. :defoe2:

VDV up top on his own just wouldn't work against City, there is no way he'd lead the line, he'll constantly drop too deep. Might as well stick Bale as the Striker
