At the time it was reported that Poch was given a straight choice between Serge and Pereira...... I got the impression that Aurier was chosen because he had greater name value and that if we could tame his 'bad boy' image we'd have an absolute worldie on our hands.

Serge is one of the list of players that have said that Poch and his personal pitch was the clincher in him deciding to come.

Obviously hindsight is easy, but it wasn't the greatest decision as Aurier's track record of making bad decisions (eg giving away penalties, THAT foul throw in etc) added up to it being essential to replace him..... and that was without the 'bad boy' image !

At the same time there were no "steer clear; the guy likes a brainfart" shouts from the resident experts....... Just talk of his bust up with Blanc and run in with the cops.

That's why hindsight is a wonderful thing !

Although at the time I remember having seen you tubes of Aurier running past opponents in France etc, and being disappointed at a medium speed Aurier at Spurs. So I wonder how good our due diligence on players was on players at the time, both in football technique, mentality, wish to improve etc - did his bad boy image hide all the other issues we ought to have unearthed.

Hopefully we do more professional buying now, so we don't buy players who a year or two later we can't wait to sell ..... before finding there are not a long queue of buyers (''cough'' Lo Celso, Ndombele ...)

Worst ever Spurs signing. Liverpool, the Euro game etc, etc.
Mourinho played him and Conte plays Royal. Baffling.

His most frustrating moment for me was when he gave away that silly free kick against City in the league cup final which gave them their goal. Was no need to foul the player there especially in the 80th minute or so when we were hanging on for penalties 😆

One thing to notice is he’s not particularly fast, but he’s so good at taking precise touches without breaking stride at all, so he’s almost always going at his top pace when he needs to. He will also change speeds a lot to keep defenders off balance.

He’s very clever with how he takes these touches… the highlight at 2:24 - the left footed touch when he beats the 2nd defender is perfectly weighted (yet difficult as he’s also using that touch as a stride) and very similarly at 2:36, he pushes the ball forward with his right and is using that same motion to already take his 1st step past the defender.

Oh yeah that foul throw cost us the season!

It’s ridiculous how people would get worked up about a foul throw. Yes, it’s baffling and shouldn’t happen at this level but it’s not a mistake that has consequences. The consequence is giving away possession once in an area that isn’t dangerous as it’s a dead ball.
