I'm with the CEO of a big insurance company this week to prep him for a series of key internal & external meetings. One of the first things he said to me after we met was that he has never hired people based on their skills...well, it's never been the No 1 criteria.
Partly cause by the time they're facing him for an interview, he already knows they're qualified for the gig on offer...the difference will be marginal between person X and person Y. But mainly, it's cause he'd rather hire people that are fundamentally good eggs. His rationale is that he could teach anybody how to sell insurance policies, but he can't do much if you're not dedicated, honest, loyal, sociable, good with time-keeping, taking initiatives etc.
That's where as a club we've got it so wrong for so long. We've signed good players, some very good ones even. But do they have the right mental attributes? Absolutely not. I think that applies to Udogie (and a fair few others). Nowhere near elite but still a decent player...however he's lazy, selfish, ill-disciplined and a bit dumb. You can get a top coach in and he'll help him improve his game, but how is he gonna turn the kid into a hard worker and a team player who hasn't got shit for brains? Not many managers in world football could accomplish that feat.
Maybe our recruitment geniuses should think about that when looking at potential signings. If they did, we wouldn't have had to endure the likes of Ndombele, Lo Celso, Richarlison and so many others.
