We were not ahead at HT in a single CL match last season, so yes. Every single game was a struggle, even against PSV.
Just one season before we bitchslapped Real Madrid with ease in the group phase, our football was poor last season.
Even the most diehard fan would admit that we were extremely fortunate to make the final last year.
We were a solid quarter final team level - but by God we got the rub of the green in the quarter final and then the semi final. 9 times out of ten we lose either or both those ties.
Guardiola's team selection in the first match was terrible to say the least.
Top 4 we ultimately deserved - not by the fact that we were so superior to all the other teams, just that Man U and Woolwich combined to pretty much self destruct.
So yeah - it papered over the cracks..... BUT... There's no reason why we shouldn't have been surfing the crest of that wave into the transfer market and into this season.
I don't think it papered over some cracks in the sense that the club and supporters both very clearly saw those cracks and we just managed to overcome them.
This isn't Jose and United coming 2nd and thinking that are contenders then falling off a fucking cliff.
Will still get disagrees though......
Did we look like a team that could get out of the CL group stages last season? We were on the ropes for most of the group stage . Inter let us through by f-ing up rather than us doing something spectacular. When I think back only a few seasons, we didn't look like a team who could get out of the CL group stages. Now we do look like one. That's a laudable achievement, because it's so hard.
