Sorry Stevee.

But no way mate.

I can only interpret it as Conte was being diplomatic about the signing of Spence, at a press conference, because his only other choice was to detach himself completely from it or refuse to comment.

I have no dog in this fight because I was against the appointment of Conte from the start and hated the style of play even when we were winning.

Spence was never a player that Conte wanted in my opinion.

He publicly backed the clubs decision to sign Spence but never picked him for the side despite Royal's struggles.

No way Levy signed Spence due to Conte's input.

That is a stretch.
3 bits of evidence that Levy asks his managers about signing players;

Evidence 1

"Spence is an investment of the club. The club wanted to do it. I said okay, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us. The club decided to buy him.”

"Antonio Conte has firmly established himself as the final arbiter when it comes to Tottenham’s first team. It’s, frankly, ludicrous to suggest that Daniel Levy, Fabio Paratici, or anyone, could successfully foist a player that Conte doesn’t want onto him just because. And Conte even alludes to this mixed method of player acquisition in his comments — Conte knows Tottenham’s history of buying and developing young players, sees Spence as a player who could become a very good addition to the squad, and signed off on the deal."

Evidence 2

"The chairman rang me and said do you want to do it ?"

Evidence 3

"According to Joorabchian, however, the real reason behind discussions stalling was that Coutinho didn’t fit into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans."

“Philippe Coutinho has no personal issue with Daniel Levy and claims otherwise are totally false. The deal did not collapse due to financial reasons," said Joorabchian."

I was someone who wanted Spence to get minutes, I thought he could do a good job for us. From all accounts he was okay in France, but nothing to suggest we were missing him. Personally I’d loan him to a lower Premier League side for the season. If he doesn’t impress then happily move him on.

Could do a lot worse than to just let Forest loan him for the year..... If he does well, his value goes up.

I think we’d be agreeable. I’m not sure Forest would.
Again, it was reported last January that no EPL team would loan Spence without a buy option.
For that to work, we would need a team that uses WBs that think Spence is going to be a difference maker on survival or we offer an option/ obligation.

I was excited for him to play for a long time but I'm not sure if it is just me but he looked like he didn't give a shit. He lost the ball a couple of times (which is no biggy in this team) and just stood there watching or flapping his arms.

He didn't seem to care at all and this was probably his biggest chance. He can't be that unfit.

He's simply not good enough for Spurs.
There's been plenty of question marks over his attitude as well, a bit surprising for a young lad.

I doubt that he doesn't care, he might know that a move is pending for him so played accordingly.

So, another Levy masterclass transfer? Thank fuck we have this football genius as Tottenham chairman…

Or was it Conte was being a cunt for not having played him? :contesmell:
Both really. I can’t think of too many players here that made a career after being initially mishandled. Seems as with bad breakups, players find it hard to forgive the club and approach their contract with the same prior enthusiasm.

Spence was full of enthusiasm on arrival but Conte broke his spirit within 6 months, as he did many other players (Gil, Bissouma).

It seems important to actually play the player some after arrival so they don’t just sit around stewing over simultaneously being not good enough to play and not getting the game time needed to improve.

Maybe Levy wasn’t the one to reject Spence, but he was dumb enough to hire Cunte.
