How do you do this without a 4th promoted team?

Surely forcing the 1st place finisher into a playoff is out of the question.

5th vs 8th and 6th vs 7th, winners play 3rd and 4th, then winners play for the promotion? Looks like the NFL playoffs. What a clusterfuck.
Would be same as in the National League nowadays.

Top 2 automatic

So in effect Round 1 of play offs

5th v 8th
6th v 7th

Round 2 of Play off

3rd v Winner 6th/7th match
4th v Win er 5th/8th match

Final, the Round 2 winners

National League do it on one game basis at home of better “seed”, so 5th v 8th match would be at home of team finishing 5th for example

Another case of money being more important than anything else.
(See 2030 World Cup: 64 teams)

Fucking ridiculous. Sunderland going up on 76 points rather than Sheff U. who amassed 90 was bad enough. Imagine if Milwall who finished 8th and ended on 66 points got promotion. It’s all about the money. And it stinks.

Also, 8th in the Championship is going to get absolutely fucked week in week out in the Prem.

Must be that, the winner would play 5 big games instead of 3. More TV money and gate receipts.

Does it seem fair to punish Sheffield Wednesday because their owner cannot or will not pay his bills.
Surely it would be better for the league to take over the club and find a buyer.
It should be up to the league to ensure funds are there before a buyer take over

How dumb is this? They (Southampton) knew the rules. Kick them out, or at least cancel the game at the Riverside Stadium and award Boro a 3-0 win.
Leeds were fined 200k for doing something similar multiple times under Bielsa. Would have thought soton will get a fine and that'll be it.

No. The rules were introduced after Leeds were caught and fined. Any club caught doing the same has no excuse and should be punished much harder.

"EFL rules state "no club shall directly or indirectly observe (or attempt to observe) another club's training session in the period of 72 hours prior to any match".

It was brought in seven years ago after Leeds United were fined £200,000 by the EFL for watching opponents train before matches."

I guess soton will only have themselves to blame if they do get hit hard. personally, i want them to go up just in case we get relegated. Think they'd be near the top of the league if they stay in champo whereas the other 3 in the playoffs might struggle.

Interesting how many teams that play in red & white are dirty cheating mongrels.
