If poch hadnt spunked £100m on lo Celso and Ndombele things could have been so different. Although maybe he had already lost the squad after the CL final

100% that summer was a big one.
Looking back what a fucking awful transfer window.
It certainly set us back and made Levy even more wary of spending it all on two players.

But a big club would have shrugged that off and gone again.

From the owners, in effect, but not really.
They issued special category shares to the value of 150m and gave it to the club.

That can't, and won't, continue to do that.

The point is, it can be done and that was merely one way.
Not only do we have so much leeway that we could spend a theoretical £400m and still be safe from reprimand, but the rules state you have something like 3 years to make the money back if you go over.

There clearly are ways to bring money into the club, that's been demonstrated. There is clearly room to spend theoretical money as the rules say so.
But none of this will happen. The money would more likely be spent on something that is more likely to generate income. A hotel. A theme park. Genetic research into creating the worlds best footballers of 2038, all of whom are born Spurs fans and loyal. You get the idea.

It is like you slept through the Sugar years. From the conception of the PL in 1993 until ENIC took over in 2003 we were a joke of a team. Average finishing position was 11th/12th. We did not come close to qualifying for Europe most years (1 foray into Europe with George Graham who dropped Ginola for a key game we lost). Yes we won the '99 league cup, but back then the big teams fielded youth teams in that competition to focus their first team players on the CL / PL / FA Cup (it was before big squads). We were involved in more relegation battles than we were finishing in the top 4. ENIC had a helluva tough job to get us back to being a big club again after Sugar had totally ruined us.
1 FA Cup and 1 League cup in 9 years. Dug the club out of financial ruin, pushed for the creation of the PL and put Sky at the forefront to show it and monetize it.
Also spent considerable money on modernising the stadium to make use of the income of match days.
So he won 200% of the trophies of ENIC in les than 50% of the time and arguably "progressed" the club as much from a lower financial starting point.

Clearly he was not a great chairman. He obviously hated the game as much as the likes of Simon Jordan and thought he could make money whilst also making the club successful. He was wrong, lost interest and hung around too long. But let's not pretend the man did nothing. He stopped us going under and if not for that, we could be in the lower leagues if not broke and gone.

We do have massive amounts of leeway.

I get people wanting Enic to spend their own money on players, even if that is put on the club as a loan.
This happens at pretty much every other club bar perhaps Liverpool.

Enic have been very consistent in their stance on this and have made it very clear that it's not going to happen.
What I don't get is people expecting that to change.
Of course they can criticise and disagree but saying, and asking, the same things for 20 years is pointless.

Other than share issues, or selling off part of the club (ain't gonna happen) I can't see how they can raise money.🤷🤷

You're bang on with the last part. They will invest THFC money in things that create more revenue for THFC.
It's a good long term plan, but does fuck all for us in the here and now.

I remember the Sugar years, but if you want to go back further Spurs were always a big player in the transfer market. So Spurs aren't defined by the Sugar years anymore than they are defined by the ENIC years. We struggled and the original Champions league teams had a headstart but lets not pretend Spurs were always some perennial poor kid. We've always been among the richest clubs in England.

The point is though, ENIC are loaded and could easily propel us to success if they had the ambition to do so. They simply don't. They are happy as long as we are top 4 and they are on the CL gravy train our profile is high, the stadium is full, the gourmet burgers and pints are selling, people are in the club shop and the NFL comes to town semi-regularly. They are selling us a dream. But its all an illusion because there is no weight or ambition behind any of it.

It's almost as if the club started in the 90's and didn't have a lot of success beforehand.

We aren't expecting it to change. We want ENIC out because they aren't willing to take us to the next level.

What I don't understand is why people still defend ENIC. It's almost like people are happy with just finishing 4th (not that I even think we will manage that this season)

With our stadium (which is the one thing I do credit ENIC for) and the fact we are in London we could easily attract a sugar daddy, and somebody who might actually have the ambition to win the big trophies.

That's why I want our fan base to pressure ENIC into lowering their asking price and selling up and fucking off.

I can't handle anymore of ENIC's bullshit, we can all see they have no ambition by looking in the trophy cabinet yet they pretend and sell us this dream every summer, Get an elite manager like Conte in on a promise they will back him just to sell season tickets and then betray him.

Sick to death of it.

Just wish more of our fan base could see it for what it is.

EDIT : Here is a serious quesiton for all the ENIC backers.

If ENIC just came out and said. They are in it purely to get top 4, to get in the champions league, fill the stadium, entertain the NFL, sell shirts and anything else is a bonus. Would the ENIC backers settle for that? Would our fan base accept that? I wager if they found out that is the extent of their ambition they wouldn't settle for it and people would stop going.
This is what Enic want

But rather than fess up to that we have the Mourinho failure and now the Conte failure. Selling the fans a dream and an illusion as cheap as possible.

Pulling the wool over everyone's eyes.

But the trophy cabinet does not lie.

We are a well run business
We are not a successful football club

Some are ecstatic about line 1 and others are very angry about line 2

We seem incapable of doing both, I am one of the apathetic angry about line 2

The thing is though that the value of the club is set by the market and it's assets.

I have no idea if Enic are looking for too much, not enough, or if the value is correct.🤷🤷

Enic will be pressurised by nobody.
Most of the fans are apathetic on the issue.
The protest was an embarrassment.

I don't understand why people are convinced that someone will pay £3bn for the club, out of their own pockets and then invest a further billion of their own money on players.

Unless we get an oil state to buy us, we're far more likely to get a "Glaser" who'll put the buying price of the club as a debt and take all that money on our of the club.

Just to be clear, I'm not against Enic selling up. I'm worried about what type the new owner would be.

You have to deduce that to sell, they would want the current value of all owned assets + a calculated future income to sell up. As things stand, they have no pressure to sell as they're comfortably getting by. You just don't sell profitable businesses unless a much, much larger competitor makes an extraordinary offer.

I cannot see it happening.

the two are incompatable.
Very difficult but not impossible , although hard to make a case for a club that is both. That is why the ENIC apologists being so full of righteous indignation about who might buy us is quite funny . It is tantamount to saying we can only sell to some pillar of society who only does good deeds, or stick as we are .So let’s never win anything then. My opinion is I doubt anyone becomes a multi billionaire by being a nice guy , so it’s not about being owned by nice people , it’s levels of vileness one can stomach

I'd rather we take a risk in an effort to bring some glory back to this grand old club.

What happened to "to dare is to do?"

I'd rather that then endless seasons of what ENIC are serving up even if that is the stable path.

Football is about romance not cold hard accounting.

Is there a correlation between the last few remaining posters still defending the bald prick, and either living abroad and or never going to a game? Try forking out £100’s for a match day, investing 8-10 hours and still backing this failed fraud

Don't you live in South Africa?

As you are alluding to here the best pressure for the fan base to apply is to stop going. Stop buying the merch, and have a half empty stadium every week.
When it hits their bottom line they will sell

Not going to happen though because people are still buying the snake oil every year.

"Oh we got Conte now we will win..."

Nope.

There is one giant Egg headed reason why that won't happen.

Went to see us v Coventry away in late 90s on boxing day. Absolute dump and the place was black and white. Even worse we got beat 4 nil. Dark days.
I was there brother. It was the week after the 1-6 home defeat to Chelsea which I also attended.

The darkest of dark days they were.

Stephen Carr hit the post that day at 0-0 I recall.

Those two games sealed Christian Gross's fate.

That's my belief. Get a coach who brings optimism, sell 40k season tickets and tick over.
It's cheaper to do that every 18 months than to build a competitive squad.
If you recall, we were on the verge of appointing Conte as the deadline for renewal passed in 2021. Almost as soon as it passed, the talks broke down.
Then Nuno came. Then things hit what can only be described as rock bottom for ENIC and Levy.

I think rock bottom is coming for them real soon.
Can't come soon enough

History of trying to be the best?

How many league titles did we win last century?

If we equal that this century does that mean we have continued our history of trying to be the best??
