We need to become winners not runners up. Mourinho knew that when at Chelsea the first time he started by winning the League cup to get that winning mentality and followed up with greater glories. Yes Chelsea spent money to get the glories but money is only part of the jigsaw and you need that winning mentality as well. We must not let last season’s cup win become a distant memory and follow up with more success.

Oh come on. The season before Ranieri had come 2nd in the league, and Mourinho proceeded to garner a then-record 95 points to win them the title, surpassed only by the Pep and Klopp era. The LC was a side quest on that trail blazing path.

Okay, but then we're always back to the question of what does success look like?

If it is to aim for the cups, then I say we're aiming too low. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see us lifting the FA Cup once more, but not if it means we have to accept 10th in the table to do it. If success means becoming a top side which can sign the best players and compete for the biggest silverware, then there's a different competition we need to be in.

The cups are stepping stones. The FACup is 6 matches! So no excuse to end up low down in the league but also no excuse to send out a disjointed team of players not used to playing together against good opposition.
