The point is that it is in his interest to prove himself as because of Brexit he will be considered a foreign based player and will find it even harder to get into Madrid's squad even if Zidane leaves. He will end up like Rose not in the squad and any other team in Spain will have the same problem. If come the end of the season he is still not getting into our team, then what Premiership team would take him on his wages. He really is stuffed and needs to do something.
Contract is up in another year though at stupid wages. No club in the world was ever going to be able/willing to take on his wages, really, and he was never looking like giving them up either.
It was just a loan to get him out the building, and Madrid will be looking for the same sort of arrangement next season as well regardless of how he performs here. If he performed well, they would have just used his 1 year loan as a makeweight in a transfer.
Its next season that matters to him as it will be his audition for whatever club signs him next. And what sort of signing on bonus and contract he pulls.
