Gomes - Waduya Reckon?

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has indicated that he could stay at White Hart Lane following Harry Redknapp's departure.

Personally, I still love the bloke....but it would worry me. So brilliant, but is the ultimate "confidence player", and can have a crisis at any moment. You can still shag my wife Huerelho, but I need convincing on your mental strength.

The 31-year-old failed to make a single Premier League appearance during last season after falling behind both Brad Friedel and Carlo Cudicini in the pecking order under Redknapp's reign in charge of Spurs.

Gomes admitted in April that he would like to return to his former club PSV Eindhoven, but the Brazilian has now stated that ''things have changed.''

''It was a very hard season, I was desperate to leave. Now things have changed as the manager left last week,'' Gomes told Arena Sportv.

The shot-stopper is also eager to force his way back into the Brazil squad, but accepts that he must be playing first-team football in order to achieve his aim.

''I want to return to the national team but I have to play first,'' Gomes added.

''Once I'm playing again, my focus will be on returning to the national team. I know how good it is to be there.

''Of course, they are rejuvenating the national team, but I'm only 31, which is a good age. I'll do very well this season.''

No, move on.

You just cart have a keeper who makes as many mistakes as he does. Instills.no confidence in the defence at all...

The thing about Gomes is...he's a fantastic shot-stopper. He's made some outstanding saves in the past, real match winners and this is too easily overlooked when he makes a mistake. And when he does make a mistake, he's destroyed because of it...as happens with most keepers (see: Why Robbo won't play for England)

Originally, Gomes used to stay on his line and let the defenders deal with most things, but he was encouraged to come off his line more, deal with crosses, corners and generally command his area better....this is when he really started to make mistakes. It's not easy to know when/when not to come for crosses, especially if you've not done it for most of your career, but under the tutelage of Parks, he tried. His only other real weakness was his extremely fragile confidence. Confidence that was smashed to piece and ground to dust when Harry decided we needed 3 senior keepers at the club (Gomes, Cudicini, Pletikosa), no other team has 3 senior keepers!

Ultimatley, Pletikosa was replaced by Friedel and Gomes' place was lost...to a keeper who doesn't come off his fucking line!! (oh the irony!). For as much as Friedel is lauded, I genuinely believe, given the same remit of staying on his line, Gomes would save more than Freidel does because of his superior reflexes and agility. The only thing I think Friedel is better at than Gomes at, is commanding and communicating with his defence. As much as I believe Gomes could learn to do this, he would be helped by a more consistant defence in terms of personnel.

I reckon, with the right manager, Gomes could still be a top keeper for us.

I love the bloke, he really seems to like the club.
But sadly he will remain our 3rd choice keeper.

I hope for next season we have:
1st - New Keeper
2nd - Friedel
3rd - Gomes

Gomes has all the tools in his locker to be a top keeper, better than Friedel even. However, if your defence doesn't have any confidence in you then you've got no chance.

Better shot-stopper than Friedel, but Friedel has better distribution and 'safer hands'.

Maybe Gomes and Vertonghen can bond over a Heineken mini-keg.

(everything will be fine and dandy until Friedel shows up with some Pabst Blue Ribbon)

Its a tough one really, Gomes will save things that Friedel wont due to his athleticism and quick hands, but Friedel doesn't have the errors in him.

They say top goalkeepers win you 10 points a season.

Gomes loses you points.

It doesnt really matter how many great shots he saves with amazing reflexes blah blah blah look good for the cameras blah blah.

He doesnt just make mistakes, he makes huge blunders which have an effect on the whole team not to mention the media who latch on to it.

Brad is clearly far more professional and while he may not light up the place with amazing saves, he is far more dependable, which, ultimately, as a goalkeeper, you have to be.

Of course it bloody does!! Every great shot he doesn't save is a goal against us!!!

If it turns out to be AVB, then at least the Portugese/Brazilian language barrier won't be a problem!

...and if it IS AVB, then surely a 40+ year old won't be his cuppa tea either!!

Therefore, henceforth ergo, I deduce that 'Hilarious Goo-mess' WILL BE TOTTENHAM'S #1 next season if AVB comes in.

This is my point really, Gomes will let in a few howlers that Friedel wont, but will save things that Friedel wont......

No way to know for sure who you'd be better off with really....

Either way we're screwed because of our horrendous bad luck, Gomes plays against us in a shoot-out, has a blinder, plays for us, dives the wrong way 5 times.

It doesnt matter when he makes a great save, then the very next thing he does is give away a penalty. Or drop the ball over the fucking line.
Thats his problem, he has made great saves but he has made just as many clangers.

I honestly cant see why anyone would want him back in the team. We are so much more settled without him.

Regardless of how much we may like him.

Oh god no! AVB isn't that foolish! I can see AVB bringing in a new first choice and maybe keeping Gomes. AVB isn't no mug.

100% agree.

I still like him, few mistakes but honestly I don't think he's cost us as many points as he's won us in the great scheme of things. The mistakes he made have been games we've lost comfortably or won anyway. (5-0 down to Madrid and he makes a howler, hardly changed the game did it?!)
