Performance How far away are we really from challenging the top 4 again ?

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Far and close. One is easy and the other impossible to know.

How far would anyone have said Forest were last season?

The question is fair but the answer is an unknown.

We might however be 3 games away from obviating the need to finish in the top 5, for the cherished prize it yields, which for me is a bit nonsensical.

Then ask how far we would be from winning the CL - light years.

This is the worse Tottenham team in over 20 years in my opinion. Apart from a few youngsters and a fit VDV it’s a collective of shite . Yet funnily enough we could be playing CL football next season.
We are better than 17th but no better than 7th I reckon. We need better players and a better manager and in a couple of years if we get it right we coul challenge . A shit load of work needs to be done and we need to get the recruitment spot on. If the last 6 years are anything to go by, this is going to take some doing .

Solanke - NEW
If we get those 4 signings right then maybe we can be a serious team again.

6: We have no proper defensive-minded midfielder. Bentancur/Biss not good enough. I don't know what Gray will become but he's not ready. I'd take Palhinha all day long. We need our modern day Sandro/Palacios.

10: Maddison is not the guy. Fairweather player. I'd want a younger, more dynamic 10 in to properly challenge for his place (and we need to end the "Kulu at 10" experiment).

Wings: Odobert/Tel/Moore/Yang might come good but none are ready to start for a top 4 side. Johnson and Son are not good enough. So we need two new wide starters (we have done for 2 years now).
Danso and Udogie are bloody useless

18 losses in the league is shit and being in 16th is the dogs but does anyone really believe we're this shit?

Like how far away are we from actually challenging for a top 4 place consistently or at least getting back to where we should be (in the top 6)

Are our players really this bad because we have overrated them or have they stagnated to a level where they're amongst the worst players in the division, or is it simply down to the coach/coaching staff and their methods that these players are playing under and they're suffering from no clear direction or lack of confidence when they play?

In that case what or who do we actually need to get back in contention, do we need an overhaul of staff/manager/players?

Who gives a fuck about challenging for top 4 again?

The question should be how far are we from making a title challenge and reaching Champions League finals again?

And right now, probably 3 seasons

We finished 5th last season so probably aren't as far away as it feels. If you look at some metrics like goal difference, touches in opponent's territory, etc the you could make a case for our league position being a little bit harsh. Not a popular opinion on here but 15 of those 18 defeats were by 1 goal, so on another season you probably come away with a result in at least 5 of them games..

But I think we have to accept that we are currently a midtable team and we've allowed clubs like Villa and Newcastle to overtake us. Its at the stage now where it would be a genuine surprise if we were to finish above either of them next season and they'll be well ahead of us in any top 4 betting for next season.

I don't think its all doom though. We have a very young squad and some really talented young players who could easily become some of the best players in the league if nurtured right. A new manager will also make a huge difference where if we simply start keeping some clean sheets then we'll win much more games. We do the hard stuff good but the simple stuff all wrong. The foundations are there for a new manager to really improve us. But realistically anything above 8th next season will be a success which sadly shows how far we have regressed.
