The buy out clause came into effect next season, hence why Liverpool are signing him then. They paid extra to trigger it early.
His release clause becomes active in the summer of 2018, so Leipzig had no chance to keep him last then. Liverpool paid over the odds this summer to get him next summer just to head off any competition.
