I know it's not a popular opinion but I'd like to think the money we'd receive from both Eriksen and Alderweireld would go towards strengthening both full back positions and bringing in two new central midfielders.

I almost feel like giving our team more strength in depth, more balance, would be crucial to us than going out and replacing Eriksen and Alderweireld like-for-like. Considering there aren't many out there better than Alderweireld and Eriksen, it'd be silly to even attempt to. But that DOESNT mean we'll end up doing worse. It just requires smart acquisitions and trust in the coach.

I know that it's probably hard to believe that Poch will be trusted in the market and we will indeed get smart acquisitions in but I'd like to be positive on this matter.

Best sell him then, the cunt.

I'm sure we can pick up a cheap teenager from Walsall who can do a job

I think it's more the point that Eriksen probably wants to do other things with his career? Maybe he wants to go and experience La Liga at one of the big clubs, who will give him more chance of a trophy?

If you think we're not going to offer Eriksen what he's worth, I'm not really sure what else I can say. In the last year alone, we've splashed out millions giving our players more money to extend their contracts.

Call it crazy blue-sky thinking, but we could also pay one of the world's best playmakers what he's worth.

It's not like you can just go and pick up a like-for-like replacement whenever you want.
It’s not about the money though Bill, Eriksen has had a long game and that was building up to being one of the best players in world football. That has come with an ambition to eventually play for one of the best teams in the world... which unfortunately we aren’t.

He has always been very clear that he has his own path mapped out and we are coming towards the natural break.

Good post. With the exception of special circumstances (i.e. Kane's particular attachment to the club) we have to operate in the tier below the super-rich clubs who can hold onto almost any player and not have to worry about money.

I was one of many who thought selling Coutinho could be Liverpool's undoing - yet they took the money they received for him and invested smart (despite paying big price tags for incomings). Alas, one of my biggest worries is that our club hierarchy are viewing player prices one/two years behind the actual market and will fuck up replacing someone like Eriksen.

Whatever is the point of us staking the farm on building The Best Stadium In The World© if we're not striving to be one of the best clubs in the world?

Strikes me that your ambition doesn't stretch much beyond being a higher class of feeder club.

Tell you what Bill, you can call Ford a Porsche for all I care, but it’s still a Ford.

The reality is that, in the world’s eyes, including our own players, we are regarded as a tier below Madrid, Barca, Juve etc. because it’s the truth, regardless of our future ambitions.

If you want to be all Scouse and myopic, go ahead, but you’ll only disappoint yourself. As I said, with a fair wind we may have a slight chance to tie him to another contract but it’s looking unlikely at this point, no?

The Scousers reinvested double what they had come in from sales which we won't do.
Our worry is we will replace with a downgrade/prospect / cheap punts. It's a risky strategy that could bring the walls crashing down if we don't get it right .
We always seem in a state of vulnerability.

Everyone is a downgrade on Eriksen to be fair - which is why I feel it'd be silly to aim for a 'replacement' for him.

If we were to sell Eriksen and Alderweireld and realistically get £110,000,000 for them for example.

Left back: Junior Firpo - £40m release clause
Central midfielder: Sander Berge - £25m
Central midfielder: Amadou Diawara - £30m

Leaves us £15,000,000 left over to perhaps get in a young prospect like Jarrod Bowen in for Pochettino to turn into a star.

But then we also have the money for Champions League qualification, for finishing in the top four and free wages from the likes of Dembele, Wanyama, Vorm, Llorente, Janssen, Nkoudou all leaving too. Wouldn't be surprised if one of Trippier/Aurier leave too allowing for us to go for a new right back.

Obviously this is all a bit too wishy - but I'd just much rather us try and fill out the squad and bring in players in key areas that are needed if we are going to end up selling Eriksen.

Lloris
RB - Sanchez - Vertonghen - Firpo
Diawara - Berge - Dele
Lucas - Kane - Son
Is a very well balanced team, depending on who the right back is. Though I'd be willing to upgrade Lucas for a wide forward who could perhaps get us 15 goals a season (Werner is available in the summer as he only has 18 months left on his contract for example).

I wish it was all that easy though and we know at Spurs it never is.

A shame Lo Celso is looking like signing for Betis though because he'd have been a really good signing to come in and try and 'mimic' what Eriksen does for us.

They have Isco, Modric and Ceballos on similar positions. And stadium rebuild to come. Hazard would cost 150-200M, Eriksen too. FFP has their saying. It can't be like PSG with Neymar/Mbappe cause different situations.

Both Hazard & Eriksen will be in the last year of their contract in the summer. No way will Hazard demand a fee of £150m-£200m.

If we get an offer of around £80m Levy will cash in 100%

l think we've got more chance of Jack Grealish types. The money may go to cover the late stadium fiasco , paying for it , pay rise for our chairman , more infrastructure projects.
We haven't really used the champs league money for any real investment in the first 11.

As the one person on here who doesnt think Eriksen is consistent enough to be called world class, Im pretty ok with it. I genuinely believe that the "Eriksen plays poor, Spurs play poor" thing is a myth.

Wonderful player on his day, and his day is pretty often these last few weeks

But if Im honest, he underwhelmed as much as the next man for the first months of the season before his injury, and has had some very poor games down the years.
He'll go with my respect though unless he starts acting the tosser, which I just dont think he will.
Fair play, club rolls on.
