He's played left back for Belgium over 100 times, the FIFA ranked number one Country in the world ... think that probably qualifies him as a specialist ... surprised you and all the agrees didn't know that.
But we didn't buy him to play left back. How many time do you have to play in position before you qualify as a specialist?

Is Dier a specialist DM? Is Moura a specialist striker?

Playing over 100 games for the best national team in the world as a left back probably makes him a specialist ... but it doesn't matter all that much he will probably be gone in six months anyway.

Maybe for Belgium it does but the prem is different.

Don't recall him playing much at left back internationally in the last few years, you'd almost think he doesn't want to play left back...as it's not his best position.

Which makes sense.

He's played 1 game at LB for Belgium in his last 35 caps and before playing there against Brazil in the World Cup, hadn't played left back for his country since 2016.

Where did you get over 100 games at left back from?

Vertonghen and Alderweireld were Belgium regulars at LB ad RB as Belgium had lots of CB's but no decent FB's, although in last couple of years that has changed and they now tend to play as CB's for Belgium.

But Vertonghen was playing for years as Belgium LB, whether that's for 40 matches or 60 matches I'm not sure. But either way its a lot. And his 2nd half performance against Dortmund (and MOTM ?) the other year showed he'd not forgotten how to play LB.

BTW, Vertonghen started off playing at Ajax as a CM, it was Martin Jol (then Ajax manager) who converted him to a CB, so Vertonghen is adept at playing lots of positions.

Based purely on today's performance we have a very decent core to build round, these looked our best players today :

Lloris - Seemed to be back to his best
Alderweireld - I worry for his legs, but still a very quality defender
Tanganga - Still learning, but he's always been one of our best performers in the half dozen PL matches he's played
Lo Celso - The more he plays the better he gets
Winks - Mr Steady, rightly namechecked again by Jose in his post match interview
Ndombele - Oozes quality - just need to get him to a point where he can play 90 mins
Bergwijn - Looks a superb acquisition

Obviously some of the others weren't quite as good as they can be, but add Son, Dele, Sanchez and even the injured Kane and Davies and a few others and we are good to go, especially if we add another 4 or 5 players in the summer, !

Tanganga wasn't a January signing, but it sure feels like we signed a top defender to start to play in January.

Still staggered that after seeing his preseason performances we didn't see him in PL until January - I guess injuries helped facilitate that. But we could have certainly done with him in the first half of the season.

He hasn't played LB over 100 times, he's played 118 in total. A quick look through the list suggests 49 at LB the rest mostly at CB, with the odd one at CM, the last 34 games at CB for example. He's on record as saying the reason he joined Spurs not Woolwich was because he wanted to play CB (although the alternative choice was Woolwich where Wenger wanted him as a CM).

he's never been a "specialist" LB, he played there because Belgium had too many good CB's, Vermalen was ahead of him for LCB, and they didn't really have a LB.

Good luck BC.

Hands up on this one - he's played left back for Belgium about 50 times not 100 as I previously said, my bad should have read the data properly ... at least you took the time to look so thanks.

He is primarily a CB off course, but the point is if he's good enough to play left back for the world's number one ranked international team he's probably good enough to be counted as a back-up LB for us.

Don't think I seen this mentioned until now:

"Bolton Wanderers have signed Tottenham midfielder Anthony Georgiou on loan until the end of the season."
