Her gets until July 15th to sign a new contact (if we want him), if he don't. We sell. If the manager and the transfer team has identified a gap. The team presents Levy (or a DoF) with 5 alternatives (of course with a priority list) and the one responsible for negotiating makes the best deal he's can.

I had thought DL was on this path. But what must also be added here is that since a player can't be forced to move then everyone must be on-board with sitting said player for those 2 years and focusing recruitment and preferential minutes on his replacement. A stick has to follow the carrot.

Or people need to realize that since the Neymar situation many more players are going to be running down their contracts and there's nothing wrong with that. But clubs (and supporters) need to accept this new reality.

That’s what I’m thinking. Especially if they fail to land Fernandes.

Thing is though, it’s a shit loan. He’s too injury prone. Great player but, in my opinion, we’re correct to pass.

Never made sense to me that more players didn't run down their contracts, actually. Once the transfer fees paid, and funds available to pay them, began rising so excessively why wouldn't more players do it? Does anyone know how much Barkley ended up getting as a signing on fee at Chelsea? Probably doubled his net compensation over the life of that Chelsea contract by running down his Everton deal.

If it does become standard practice, FIFA/UEFA are going to have to do something to control the market though.

think theres an element of risk to player if they wind it down... clubs may move on, injuries, bird in hand....

Not only that but some players have an affection for the club they are leaving and want them to do well.

Which is why I like Eriksen. He signed a bumper contract just before he left Ajax. What a guy!

Quote from his agent way back in 2013:

"He is still very young, very appreciative towards Ajax and happy to stay. At the moment we are not in talks with Ajax but we will be if a move doesn't materialise in this window. One thing is for certain, he won't leave on a free transfer."

Yeah, but we're familiar with a different paradigm, true free-agency enforced legally and accepted in supporter's minds. It is coming to that in football I believe. It is unsustainable otherwise. I know if I was in one of these player's position I would satisfy my contract...see what I did there? Satisfy instead of 'run down'. The Bosman gives the right but too many folks with incentives at odds with that of the player have a say in preventing that.

I have no issues with Eriksen's contract situation. I do have issues with his play the last 2 seasons. But it was the club's job to take action and the last time to do something about it was when, apparently, Poch decided (at least that's what Spursidol Spursidol and SchmoodSpur SchmoodSpur would have you believe but) that he didn't want any transfers in summer 2018. Two years before contract end or accept that the player will see it out to its termination and leave on a free. Why let your old club get 50M when it could go in your pocket? Transfer fees make no sense and neither do these longs contracts (from a top player's perspective).
 
It’s probably already been covered in the thread, but in regard to Islam Slimani, I’m sure Brendan Rodgers said recently Villa had no chance of getting him on loan after they enquired due to complications with ending his loan at Monaco early.
Aside from that he’s never hit the heights he did at Sporting Lisbon anywhere else so I can’t see this as a good idea.
