Transfers January 2023 Transfer Thread. The Big One

It really doesn't work like that as Bissouma is showing. Contrast Bentancur, a Juvdntus bench warmer.

There is often a world of difference between a player who performs at a lesser club, with all respect to Brighton and a club like ours.

We need better but it's as much about mentality and strength of mind as it is about obvious quality.
Bissouma is changing position (CDM) and being asked to play a much more conservative role, Juve were deluded and are being found out hardcore rn, and Trossard could succeed for anyone. I don't really see why the level of the club has been any kind of determining factor for these players' performances.

January is about buying any player who can significantly improve the squad - we've got a full 25 man squad so no point in buying anyone who isn't a significant upgrade.

We'll be lucky to buy more than one/two or three players.

Positions we would probably look at upgrading if we can :

1. An alternative to Kulusevski - we have Richarlison who can be an alternative to Kane or Son as a goal scoring forward, but we don't have a creative forward ...... and we've really missed Kulusevski.

2. RWB. But we may find no good upgrades availavle, just as we did in Summer. In which case we hope Conte has a change of heart over Spence.

3. LCB. We are looking for an upgrade to Lenglet and Davies. Not easy.

After that its really tricky
- we have 4 very good CM's, and I don't see Conte buying a creative CM, someone who can cover CM/AM maybe ?
- another striker to provide extra cover for Kane or Son injuries?
- ?????

Our last couple of january signings weren't half bad. We might be able to repeat the trick again. Even minor upgrades might give us significant improvement in performance and results.

In terms of specific targets.

De Veij from Inter might be an option, surely better than Dier.

Pedro Porro might be an option if Sporting get dropped out of the CL on tuesday. Looked pretty to me.

loan became permanent in the summer for £7m (buy back of £20m), so he's now Sporting.

Maybe try to swap Porro for Reguilon ?
If we want him, need to sign him up asap before City have a RB/RWB slot they need to fill. Otherwise we can have whatever offer accepted but he'll only accept personal terms with 20m buyback City...

I thought he's looked pretty darn good so far. Haven't seen much else of him so can't say for sure, but from what I've seen, he was much better than our options at the same price (20m).

I still want to see Spence get 1 goddamned start before we go shopping again though.
