You are now claiming, with a straight face, that Liverpool would have been as successful without Van Dijk?

Or just that getting him early didn’t make a difference?
I don’t remember their circumstances that season. Maybe he helped them win important points and an FA Cup tie that year? Did they win the FA Cup that year?
Read what you wrote. The rest of us have to.
What you wrote wasn’t clear numbnuts.
Well, he said signing him "for the start of the Jan TW" so surely that pretty clearly says that in his view, them signing him on 1st Jan rather than (say) 15th Jan made little difference to their overall long-term success. Yes I suppose him featuring in a couple of games in early Jan could have made a difference, but surely no one is seriously going to say that one or two specific games in early Jan drive the long term success of a club. Obviously any one cup game is the difference between going through and going out, that's the nature of a knock-out competition, but I think if you asked people why Liverpool have been so successful in recent years, far more would say "signing Van Dijk" than " making sure we got Van Dijk in early Jan not a couple of weeks later".

EDIT: Of course I'm indulging there for a moment the idea that they signed him 'early' and not 5 months later than intended, and I'm ignoring all the contentious context of that transfer that has been discussed to death over the last 10 or so pages. Even without those two factors, the 'early in Jan' bit can't seriously be considered to be the cause of Liverpool's long-term success.

I think the point over the last billion pages today is that it wasn't "early"; it was essentially "late" as they ballsed the deal up in the previous summer.

17/18 season:

Must have done them some good in the second half of the season cos they were a Lovren clown show at the back in the first half of the season.

January

The Reds opened their 2018 on the first day of the year by traveling to Turf Moor to take on Burnley. Mane broke the deadlock in the 61st with a goal but Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson leveled the score in the 87th minute. The Reds, however, were able to get all three points off a Ragnar Klavan header in the 94th minute with a 1–2 final.[44] Following the triumph in the league, the Reds hosted Everton for the second time in under 30 days, this time in the third round of the 2017–18 FA Cup on 5 January. While Everton received the hotly contested penalty in the first meeting, Liverpool was the one to benefit from a controversial penalty call as Mason Holgate brought Lallana down inside the box and Milner converted the penalty in the 35th minute. The derby match also featured Holgate and Firmino getting into a verbal altercation shortly before the end of the first half following a push from Holgate to Firmino that sent the latter over the advertising boards. In the 67th minute, Gylfi Sigurðsson scored on a counterattack to equalize the game at one. In the 84th minute, however, van Dijk in his Liverpool debut scored off a corner kick making it 2–1 and marking a second game in a row with a late headed goal from a defender to win the game.[45] The day after, on 6 January, the club made the official announcement that (subject to a medical and personal terms) Coutinho would be leaving for Barcelona on a deal that Paul Joyce of The Times reported could reach up to £142 million. Coutinho was subsequently announced by Barcelona that day.[46][47][48] On 14 January, Liverpool took on the undefeated Manchester City at Anfield in hopes of deal City their first loss in the league as well as a measure of revenge for the 0–5 loss the Reds were dealt in the reverse fixture. Liverpool started off strong with an Oxlade-Chamberlain goal in the ninth minute, but City scored an equalizer through in the 40th through a Leroy Sane effort. From the 59th to the 68th, Liverpool extended the lead to 4–1 through goals from Firmino, Mane, and Salah in a thrilling ten minutes of action. City got one back in the 84th from Bernardo Silva and another from İlkay Gündoğan in the 91st put it at 4–3, but the Reds held on and doled City their first loss of the league season.[49] The next game for the Reds was a 22 January meeting in South Wales against Swansea and recently placed manager Carlos Carvalhal. Alfie Mawson scored the lone goal of the match in the 40th minute and the bottom place Swans took all three from the Reds with a 1–0 defeat given to the visitors.[50] In the fourth round proper of the FA Cup, on 27 January, Liverpool took on West Brom. Firmino's chip in the fifth gave the early lead, but a four-minute double to Jay Rodriguez put West Brom up 1–2 in the 11th. Video assistant referee replay played a crucial first half role as it denied Craig Dawson a goal to make the game 1–3, then awarded a penalty to Liverpool, which was subsequently missed by Firmino. West Brom added a third with an own goal from Matip late in first half added time. Salah put the Reds within one in the 78th, but the 2–3 scoreline stood and the Reds were stunned at home by the second from bottom Baggies in the cup.[51] The final fixture of the month was on 30 January where the Reds visited John Smith's Stadium and Huddersfield Town. Emre Can's long range effort in the 26th put the Reds up 0–1 early, and Firmino added a second right before the break. Salah's 78th minute spot kick made it 0–3 and Liverpool finished January with a comfortable victory.[52]

I mean, in a sort of factual way, it was very early in the January window and not really in the summer window at all z

scarletjim scarletjim - wonderful, mature discourse.

Shadydan Shadydan - valiant work.

In April, no one will care whether we signed Dragusin before or after the Burnley game… let alone next season. Incredibly febrile and myopic takes in here.

"Sort of" doing a fair amount of heavy lifting there..... He was signed 27 Dec in amongst a tapping up 'storm'.

Anyway. I've avoided this bollocks all day... Would be a shame to get heavily mixed up in it all now.

Like you said earlier...... If Dragusin gets done this week it's still a fairly early-window signing.

That’s why I made sure in my question. I wanted to be sure that’s what he meant.

It’s a fucking stupid debate though really. There is zero comparison in the way FSG and Levy have historically done business. FSG are market makers, Levy tries to beat the market.

Ange might.

how do you know this? It’s not fifa. A lot goes into a transfer!! It’ll get done. People who think transfers are easy and take no time to get done and not t etc are so naive
Pal, there was a time when I played football and got paid for it, though not in fancy European leagues and barely made enough during my very short career to afford a bus fare. Also done my coaching badges. And I'm friends with a few ex-pros (PL, Ligue 1, Hungary, China...) and sports media. Before you have a pop at me as if I'm name-dropping/bragging/pretending to be ITK...I ain't. Just saying I know a tiny bit about how it works. Also, there's that underrated thing called logic.

You're obviously entitled to your opinion, even to bash mine...but it don't change that had we really wanted that kid in on Jan 1st, it was possible. Yeah quite probable that we'd have had to pay a premium, but there was a way to get it done.

No arguing that Liverpool are a better run club in terms of recruitment than we are by a long stretch, but to be fair, on this deal, the reason it got completed late December ready for the January window was that they’ve made a ball up of doing the deal in the summer previously.
It's a myth that clubs still wait til the TW opens to approach another club or the player directly/via his agent. Every now and then a selling club, for whatever reason, will get all pissed off about it and kick up a fuss...and the other club will be reprimanded/punished or just booed by the media and footy fans. But it happens every day of the year, everywhere. Guess what? Spurs do it too and it gets done to Spurs.

Again, had we really wanted that Radu kid in on Jan 1st (and I bet Ange would've loved it), there was a way. What it'd have taken, I ain't gonna claim to know, I ain't privy to the negotiations...though paying a premium probably the key. The fact he ain't here yet considering the discussions with Genoa and the player quite probably started weeks ago, it makes you wonder. But ofc if his club asked for an extra 10 or 15mil for him to land here Jan 1st, well yeah no way. Anyway, we'll never know, as always.

And regarding Van Dijk, that early January transfer was in fact a 5 month late summer signing.

Would love to see how many people would be praising us for getting a player 'in early' in those circumstances
That’s one way of looking at it.

Another, probably more accurate, way is that they couldn’t get it over the line in the summer, but instead of giving up or going for a cheaper alternative, they went back for him and got him.

We would never be in a position to “praise” or otherwise, something like this because ENIC and Levy would never do it.

When everyone complains about transfer negotiations being drawn out and taking too long, you've basically listed why it happens.

The minutiea is haggled over 10X more than the fee. Same for salary agreements with players which are way more complex than "£100k/week for 5 years".
They are all tradeables that can be agreed alongside a longer sale price. I doubt Levy concedes on the latter and instead tries to achieve former and latter and ‘win’

They got stupid money for Coutinho which is why they were able to pay that much for Van Dijk.

Like we did for bale, berbatov, modric, walker, and kane?
There is no point looking through FSG and ENIC transfers with the same lens.

Completely different mentality and model. I’ve made peace with it because they’ve appointed a manager that fits their mentality and model.

Occasionally frustrates you when you know that a player like Kane leaves and they will never sign a players of the same value but it can be fun finding equal talent at cheaper prices.

Replacing Kane like for like wouldn't have been a good idea, especially since we already had Richarlison and Son. It made more sense to use that money to improve the team overall.

Not even sure it would have been possible either.

Now, if we had the model to use that money to go get Rafael Leao on the other hand ….. lol

No, push those thoughts back. We did great with our recruitment spending the Kane money before we got it.

Really wouldn’t be against them going after a starting 11 potential youngster for the front 3 this window though. Nusa or Bardgji type. Don’t even need to know who it is or have an opinion on them.
