Transfers January Transfer Thread 2024

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

The club's strategy appears to be, that we go after a target, if we are able to get a clear run at them.
They seem to want, a player to be all in on them, with no other clubs involved, so no bidding war which increases the amount.
I think it's quite risky and limited, relying on a target not changing their mind, like we have just seen.
I guess this has been a Levy policy, to ensure we don't pay too much, but Kane will need to be replaced, and another year or two so will son, that is going to cost a bit is the club ready.
How does that explain Dragusin?

Of course it was, We have a reported £485million of FFP wriggle room at our disposal built up through years of frugality and profit.
But we just never, ever, seize the moment and take the opportunity to push on.
It's the way this club works and it's why Ange will be unnecessarily be operating in a straight jacket just like his predecessors

I don't see Ange operating in a straight jacket. We definitely haven't reached the stage yet where we "HAVE TO do something slightly outside the model to get over the hump.

I fully agree that the last time we did under Poch, we didn't. When that times comes, all eyes will be on the club for sure. All I'm saying is that maybe this window is an opportunity were weren't fully expecting yet.

Yes but he's also missed opportunities to invest at key times in the past.

Now, I don't think this winter was a key time in terms of the planning for this Ange project but what I'm saying is maybe the opportunity has offered itself when we weren't expecting it.

What players do you see as opportunities this window who you think we had a chance of picking up and taking advantage of others teams financial situations?

Good podcast last week with Flav on The Lab. He brought on @HLTCO (Twitter guy) to get an outsiders view on Tottenham. @HLTCO is a life-long Palace fan and he was asked about Eze. His take was that Olise and Eze should have similar release clauses, so if you’re a club that can pay that kind of fee, then Olise is the right choice. He thinks Olise is the best player he’s ever seen at Palace and would be incredible at any club.

After listening to him breakdown both players, I’d love to see us go for Olise, even though he doesn’t play as needed of a position for us as Eze would. At such a large buyout price point, get the guy with the highest ceiling.

I’d be shocked if Spurs would be willing to splash the cash for either player, but since there’s been so much Eze talk over the past two windows on TFC, thought I’d cast a vote for Olise.
We should have got Olise when he was at Reading!!

I think you're pretty much on the money there, mate. There's been the odd exception but that's usually a last minute panic buy like Sissoko after dithering, fucking about and ultimately missing out on the managers first / second choice or, as you say, pulling away when someone else gets involved.
yeah can’t believe we gave up on Dragusin when Bayern got involved! Still no way we would be spending money on a backup defender when we got VDV and Romero any way so probably for the best! :ange-facepalm:

People are complaining about the club's risk averse transfer strategy when we're a handful of only clubs who can spend money this window because of said transfer strategy, never change TFC 😆

I'm not privy to what agents and clubs are saying on the market but in the past we have reportedly agreed feed for players like Lautaro Martinez out of nowhere, because Inter needed to sell. That never happened because chavski offered them more for Lukaku and eased their need.

I'm not saying Martinez specifically but Inter's situation hasn't changed and they are far from the only club like that. That also means that there isn't a chavski to come in and offer more as well. If there are big fish to hunt, this might be the window to do it.

Maybe you test Napoli early for Kvaratshkelia
Maybe you make Milan a seriously tempting offer for Leao
Real want Mbappe and maybe they would be tempted by big money for Vini Jr now

I don't know but it feels like the kind of window where a club that has been disciplined and prudent has a fairly unique advantage to chase a game-changer. That's all I'm saying.

The names you mentioned just aren't realistic at all, Leao as I said has a release clause of £175m, Krava won't be sold anytime because Napoli will receive money for Oshimen in the Summer and you can forget about Vinicius, he isn't leaving Real and certainly not coming to Spurs.

I think you and me would have known if there were certain players we could have taken advantage because they'd stick out like a sort thumb.

It would be different if it was a Summer window but this window is honestly shit, it's a dead market because players don't tend to move mid season.

Olise is a good player but he attacks in a similar way to Kulusevski. Always going to come infield onto his left. Don’t think I’ve seen him go on the outside and look comfortable on his right even just picking out a pass. Maybe Olise has quicker feet to get that left footed cross/shot off but he’s not as involved in the game as Kulusevski. Think Eze would be the better buy as he’s a great ball carrier from deep and he can play in a few positions.

Think more importantly to Ange Eze comes across a good guy whereas I’ve seen some interviews where Olise comes across rude and arrogant to interviewers and that non celebration after that free kick against Utd was a bit of a red flag.

He's just shy and aloof, not rude.
