Match K league 11 vs Tottenham Hotspur. Wed 31st July 12pm

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Have watched this now.

First half was pretty good overall.

Second half was a mess really. Some decent individual performances but defensively all over the place down the left hand side and the midfield balance was out.

Maddison isn’t even close to being ready to start the season. He looks a bit sulky.

Inverted fullbacks leaves us open on the flanks, centrebacks have to cover the flanks, therefore need a beast of a defensive midfielder to help, out the centrebacks.
Yep. Or a pair of decent box to box midfielders...think sarr and Bissouma fit the bill pretty well... Difficult part is finding ones that can operate in the confined areas of our high press and when teams sit deep ... Which is where biso needs to improve on in fairness he is improving but its still a work in progress..

To what extent is Donley being out of position a result of the manager telling him he needs to position himself in the number #10 position when we have the ball?
Donley/Maddison/Son on left at beginning of second half was just too offensive imo. In first half, either Pape or Bergvall were covering that part of the pitch, as well as Gray was staying back. After break, Madders was not covering, Skipp playing as 6 over Gray was having horrendous minutes before switching to CB, and finally - they put fresh legs while Donley was started having visible problems with tracking back since he got tired. So, it was multiple factors and agree that I wouldnt blame Donley that much there.

Decent box to box players didn’t do enough last year
Very true mate...sarrs got age on his side and has time to improve and when he hits full strength I'm thinking he's gonna be an absolute monster. I'm thinking Vieira plus. And bis is trying, but don't think the year or so under Conte did his progression any favours. And let's not forget bentecur... He ain't got up to pre injury speed yet .. I'm still pissed with that arsehole cash....BUT a decent structured pre season and who knows we may yet see the absolute class midfielder we knows lurking....we ain't short of quality, as you inferior ATM were just a touch short on muscle..

Their team in the second half played the first 10, 15 minutes running around like a 90s kid in an aeroplane hanger, neon glow stick in hand, Micky Finn, Top Buzz . They soon slowed down as the half went on mind.

Good summary.

If season started tomorrow then Berg starts instead of Madders. And Berg is still needs plenty of minutes short of being ready.

Archie not even close to ready for 6 role but hopefully he can develop into that. It was mainly decision-making issues when in possession which is not surprising for a first-time 6. Edit: saw your comments re defensive positioning and decision making, will have another look.

Deki, Son, Timo, Djed and Donley were all cause for optimism.

I think this is pretty spot on. Our structure seemed a lot more compact in the first half, something changed, and it was a result of one of the following:

1) Gray out of the 6 and into the #8 where he seemed less effective
2) Bergvall off the pitch for Maddison
3) Sarr off the pitch for Skipp who moved to #6

I'd have to watch the 2nd half again to check but in real time it seemed like our midfield was just a lot more "empty" in the second half. I didn't love the way our midfielders were playing on the ball in the first half but one thing was for sure - their positioning was pretty spot on.

Gray was always sat in front of the back 4, Bergvall dropping in to provide the extra man, Sarr bringing the energy. Add Donley and Porro inverted into the mix and it always felt like we had a spare man in midfield.

Then in the 2nd half our midfield suddenly felt empty. Perhaps Maddison was playing higher up in comparison to Bergvall? Gray I also don't recall offering as much as Sarr in the #8.

In my mind's eye it felt like Skipp was just constantly trying to cover tons of space on his own. He's not good enough to be our #6 but also I felt bad for him and it wasn't all down to him.

In conclusion - if Donley and Porro are gonna play inverted we need our #8s to be #8s and not #10s. And sometimes we need them to realise when they need to form a double pivot in build up to prevent us getting countered on.

We also need our midfielders to use their brain and suss out the danger. Even if the manager tells them he wants them playing on the last line sometimes they need to use their brain on the pitch and make an executive call to play deeper and protect against the counter.

We need a DM that doesn’t leave the centre circle and plays as an advanced CB, can pivot forward on half turn but predominantly covers gaps defensively

How did our £60M Brazilian do? Seems to have had a consistent pre season (consistent with the two years he’s been on the payroll whilst offering absolutely fuck all).

Apparently they had a training session before this game, which is insane. One thing about being in Asia right now is training in heat is just as good as training at altitude, so expect the lads to be fit and firing from the get go.

Inverted LB, best ones play as no 10/midfielders too, and they are offensive players

Different role to a traditional LB who focuses on defence. Not used in Ange's system, hence Royal likely to move on

Donley is best as a left sided no 10, creating lots of chancres/assists and a few goals too, but its manager's decision where they play.
Yes I understand that's the new role but there were countless times last season where we were brutally exposed in that left back area. Saka and Townsend spring to mind.
You can't leave an entire area of the field exposed at this level.
VDV has papered over many cracks there, but as soon as he wasn't available we got murdered.

Been doing double sessions since they came off the plane too.
