George Abbott – Accrington Stanley v NOTTS COUNTY – 18 January

Notts County midfielder George Abbott is the January Sky Bet League Two Goal of the Month winner.

A second successive nomination for Abbott, who travelled almost as far as the ball did from the corner spot to meet it with perfect synchronicity and volley it back into the far corner of the net.

Abbott said: “It’s an amazing feeling to win this award, but really it should be shared with the skipper, Matt Palmer, because of the quality of his cross.

“The second I connected with the ball, I knew it was going in and then watched as it flew off into the top corner. I was so excited to run off and celebrate with the fans in the away end.”

Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports Pundit Don Goodman said: “Set piece goals created on the training ground give coaches, players and fans alike a real buzz and they don’t come much better than this!

“Volleys are all about technique and as we all know they can very easily go wrong and leave you with egg on your face but not this beauty.

“Abbott had to cover a good distance and wait for an age for the ball to drop, but when it did, he couldn’t have caught it any sweeter. It flew into the top corner giving the keeper no chance.”

Abbott beat off competition from Accrington Stanley’s Shaun Whalley, Bromley’s Cameron Congreve and MK Don’s Alex Gilbey.

The winners of the Sky Bet EFL Goals of the Month were selected by a panel of experts and a public vote.

The panel comprises Sky Sports’ EFL experts Don Goodman and David Prutton.

He’s been quiet mostly. Struggling to get in space quick enough (adapting to quicker pace n physicality).

Had a good burst to pass a defender, edge of the box, then was given a foul against the defender when it wasn’t (fluffed the pull back anyway).

Had a scuffed shot.

Had a lovely couple of touches, played a 1-2 and burst through right wing to attacking midfield, laid it off to the Japanese guy, continued his run and would have been in but the Japanese player tried to turn himself and messed up the chance. Very good passage.

Looks quick, but very slight. No big problems, but as said adjusting to playing style and team mates soo a bit quiet (hasn’t yet earned the right to be looked for quickly).

Promising though.

Yang off on 63mins. Had some much more confident and incisive passages second half, culminating in a lovely deft touch to beat his defender, the a low cross assist.

Lads got some game.
