There appears to be a real lack of understanding between the skills experience required to be a starting level CB (ie replacing Romero or Van de Ven) which NOBODY seems to be making and the possibility that Phillips could be the 4h CB to replace Davies - with the advantage that in UEFA competitions he would count as List B (ie in addition to squad of 25 rules).

No he's not an obvious person to play in place of Romero or Van de Ven as starters but as a 4th choice CB who will not play too often and takes up NO squad place - ie allows an additional player in the squad - is a different question. And the answer is its a reasonable possibility for the manager next season.

You do know that before joining us, Micky had played about 40 games for Volendam in the Dutch champo (which is way below the English one in terms of levels) and just one full season with Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga (33 games)? He's hardly Sergio Ramos.

I get your overall point, but maybe Ash ain't that much behind Micky in terms of (true) experience or even skills. He's also a lot fitter and not scared of heading the ball.

There have been in this thread a lot of posts saying that Phillips should automatically be re-loaned out next season on the basis he was not good enough to replace Romero or Van de Ven.

My post was to suggest that after 2 years loans in Championship, nobody was advocating that, but that his experience might well be enough to take the 4th CB position (with Romero or replacement, Van de Ven and Danso ahead of him) where he'd be a long way from being an automatic starter but still be available to provide cover whilst gaining PL level experience.

All players need to start somewhere and Van de Ven's experience in Dutch league was at a level below Championship, and at Wolfsburg he had one season playing at a level above Championship, so Phillips experience isn't as much different to Van de Venn as some posters might think.

And noteworthy that Phillips has been playing at a higher level for 2 seasons than Van de Ven had at an equivalent age - so Phillips is probably more developed than Van de Ven was at Philips current age (Phillips not 20 until June, whereas Van de Ven will be aged 24 within a week ).
