Player Lucas Bergvall

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He really isn’t though. Yes, only 19 and has loads of potential. Massive lack of composure in the final third. Doesn’t shoot or offer any real creativity. Because he’s “busy” it seems to pass the eye test for a lot of fans, there’s been very little output though.

Gray is the same when playing cm, as is Sarr and Bentancur as an 8.

Almost zero goal threat from our currently fit midfield. If we’re going 433 have to play Simons as one of the midfield 3. Have to get him into the team somewhere, without Maddison and Kulu there’s no creativity.
Apart from assuming Simons to add anything substantial (seriously developing doubts), the rest of that MF assessment is spot on.

Yes Simons has mostly struggled so far, there have been moments where he’s had flashes of what he’s about (Leeds stands out for me) a few bits of skill where you can see he’s the most talented player on the pitch by a mile. Give the lad time, bergval didn’t pull up any trees last season for me but is the new coming of Christ on here.

Hopefully Simons can be our modern (more attacking) modric. Has the highest ceiling of any player along with Micky in my opinion.

His passing when he dropped deeper second half was impressive.

First time I’ve seen him spraying diagonals. And his pass for the goal was 🤌

Him and Gray reacted exactly as I would expect 2 teenagers starting a home match to push us forward and see their team go 2 goals down in the first 7 minutes. Young players, understandably, lose their heads in such circumstances and need leadership and senior players to show them how to react or stay calm. Especially, when the visiting team's plan just got boosted with 2 goals, they came to defend a draw, and they found themselves 2 goals to the good. They have been in a system for multiple seasons and understand what the manager exactly wants.
Berg and Gray needed senior players to show leadership and ease them through the match and we build for a comeback. Unfortunately, we do not have leaders. NONE.

Yep, what I’m saying really. A midfielder playing impressive passes and spraying diagonals is what you expect from any midfielder in the top 6 English divisions or lower. It’s depressing if that’s the first time you’ve seen him spraying it out wide so we can then punt in numerous crosses which we don’t win the first contact.

How many assists/goals in his 30 odd PL appearances? Not slating him individually, our whole midfield as a unit won’t show up very well.

No, you’re missing what I’m saying. He was making passes not many EPL midfielders can make today.

I’m not talking about a few sideway passes.

They’re both young but if a player in the squad was to tell them they need guidance to see them through tonight’s match they’d be furious.

They’ve both probably played close to 100 senior games already, Bergval is capped for Sweden several times. The manager and both players will see themselves as normal players within the “senior” squad, not youth products on the fringe. Their wages will also highlight the case.

Only player who really gives a shit imo, easy to forget he's a teenager, a lot of our player should look at him and his output and feel downright ashamed of themselves. Still raw with a lot to learn, but in 5 years of he's still here and playing he's probably captain.

There's a lot to be said for players who give a shit, they get a lot more leeway than the ones who don't, despite being less talented.

What did he do tonight for you to say that?** Add that he does a Jordan Henderson and runs around a lot to pass the eye test

Yes he’s a young talented player, clapping the fans tonight? As I said last season he could take a dump on the centre circle and get praised for it. Don’t understand how his performances have warranted a cult like love.

he plays with intensity, some of it is a bit scrappy due to this, but he runs his socks off. compare his intensity to shit like destiny dogshit and its night and day, thats why he has a bit of respect from fans.

I disagree mate, spraying aesthetically pleasing long passes is easy. I didn’t see the passes you’re saying. Playing the really intricate passes or creative scoops in and around the box is where the midfielders earn their corn.

You are right the spraying diagonal pass is pleasing on the eye but not that difficult.
It was the speciality of Scholes and Gerrard. They could not do the through ball.

But - it's still a skill that only some do consistently - and of our midfield only Bergvall can. Sarr and Pall can't.

Besides that - I thought Bergvall was really good tonight. Very fluid on the ball. Great assist and nearly scored with a header.

We dropped off as soon as he eas subbed.

Ok mate. Scholes and Gerrard couldn’t play through balls like Bergval.

Like I’ve said a million times, the lad could shit on the centre circle and people on here would be waxing lyrical. Apparently he’s putting in passes like those 2 greats couldn’t. Hopefully he can gain their composure in the final third and 10% of their shooting ability.

“he was very fluid on the ball”
He changed the game for us?

Paulinha is a holding midfielder and that isn’t part of his remit. I agree Sarr can’t but is a very similar Player in my opinion. Bergval is not a creative midfielder. If Sarr puts in that same performance as Bergval tonight, not a word is said on here. Maybe 5 or 6/10. Probably gets moaned at. Bergval does it’s an amazing performance. Fucking tragic.

The kid definitely has something about him and seems to care. He's one of the few I'd happily keep at the club but far from the finished article at 19.

That being said, I'm still not entirely sure what his best position is. Seems like a busy ball-progressing 8. Personally think he needs a loan to a lower-level Prem club or Bundesliga to develop his decision-making.

whs overrating him? hes a teenager? i think people are excited about what he can grow into, he was our player of the year last year (yes shit year) but still, he walks into our first 11 over shit like bentancur who offers fuck all.

My issue is that when he turns in a 5 or 6/10 performance it’s massively overhyped. Yes he’s young, but is a sweden international. Does he ever affect games for us with goals or assists?

We beat Barca to sign him, he doesn’t get in their squad bar an injury crisis. If you’re a modern 8 you need to provide attacking input, along with goals and assists.
None of our midfielders in that role really do that.
