Player Lucas Bergvall

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Bergvall's shortcoming is his thinking - he seems to be over-confident and lack disciplined thinking which must make it hard for others to link with him.

I think Bergvall is much more likely to be loaned out (or perhaps sold) than Gray (see my comments about Gray today in his forum) - whether Bergvall is loaned out (or sold) will depend on who we recruit for our MF and possibly our forwards.

My guess is that RDZ's inclination will be to keep Bergvall as a MF squad player and try and coach him to be more structured in the way he goes about things. Whether Bergvall's hyper-confidence will mean that he is content with that may be questionable.

I think Gray and Bergvall have huge potential, but I think Scott and Wharton were far more primed and ready for the PL by the time they arrived, so less patience was needed. Both were like 1.5-2 years older and had clearly defined positions, whereas Gray and Bergvall were much bigger punts imo - a kid from a 3rd/4th tier league and a guy who had only played a handful of games in his supposed best position.

I'm all for being patient, but I don't think a club with our size and expectations is actually in a great position to develop players as raw as Gray and Bergvall as it's hard to get them the minutes needed without compromising standards. If you're gonna sign 18 year olds typically you want them to be absolute freaks already playing in a top league or you have a smart development plan for them (and we're not well-run enough for that). And Gray and Bergvall were young and raw even by Brighton/Bournemouth standards.

I'd love both to succeed, but I think at least one will need a loan this season. Simply not enough minutes to go round for them both to get the required minutes.
No, neither need a loan this season. In fact it’s fundamental to hold both for their development and to ensure they count as club trained.

Neither Scott nor Wharton were more equipped for the league. They were just properly invested in.

So let's say RDZ doesn't trust Bergvall to play in central midfield (his obvious best position) in the league and only uses him off the bench playing out wide or covering at 10. You think that would be better for his development than a good loan where he's playing 30+ games as an 8?

I'm all for keeping Bergvall around if he's actually gonna play or De Zerbi has a plan to ease him in to minutes in CM. But if RDZ is gonna use him like he did at the end of the season then all we're doing is stunting his development at a crucial age. He needs game-time in his best position, not scraps off the bench in postions where he's ill-suited and ineffective (the lad's so clearly not a 10).

I've also heard that players can have 1 loan during the 3 year registration period and still count as club-trained provided it's at a British club, so we might not even lose that status if he stays in the PL anyway.

I think Gray almost certainly stays, though. RDZ was actually playing him in midfield and he strikes me as the more mature of the two when it comes to coaching and following instructions.

Yeah - he's a bit of an old school Roy of the Rovers midfielder who wants to do everything. He plays with the joy, verve and lack of discipline of a kid in the playground. It's simultaneously his greatest strength and his biggest weakness.

He looked great under Ange cos he was given a bit of a free reign to roam and express himself on the pitch. But I don't think it's a coincidence teams ran through our midfield like it didn't exist during that period, as we were so damn open.

He's such a talented footballer and I love watching him, but I completely agree that he's the one who's far more likely to be loaned or sold if he can't take on board instruction or reel in his instincts a bit. De Zerbi's an attacking manager but, like Pep he's extremely particular and structured in his methods. He won't stand for midfielders who aren't doing what he's asking of them so Bergvall's gonna have to learn fast to make it under him.

Football Chap Football Chap whats the rule here please?

Could we say, sign Scott and loan Bournemouth Bergvall as part of the deal, with him still then becoming CT/HG?

Anyone else think he’s got too big a head to be a successful player. Can’t think of a physically bigger head in football. He’s like a midget that is full size.

Sounds like a good time to bring back the Corinthian collections.

He’s been so all over the place in the past two seasons that I couldn’t even tell you what his game is. Needs a season / half-a-season with a bit of actual structure (like Gray) and we’ll know pretty soon.

Probably squad level or sold on in the next season or two.
