But he'll be a squad player John......and a no risk, free squad player at that ..........🤷‍♂️ he'll be fine if we have a tight game and he comes on for maybe 15 mins.
All the top clubs have half decent squad players, why can't we?............He looked pretty good at Fulham i thought.....a lot of the time i agree with you, but not on this occasion.
That's fine to disagree mate. (John's away for 6 months btw)
I just think it's indicative of what we are and how we're run. Most of our first XI are what we should only term squad players and shouldn't be anywhere near the first team as it is........We don't need any more.
I respect your opinion though. We'll maybe re-visit the debate in a few months.

We don't seem to be doing it so much recently, ie not selling Kane to Manchester City 2 years ago,

edit - In hindsight we should have sold Dele Alli when he was playing well.

Which would have been a bad move, imagine selling the double young PFA player of the year at the end of 2017 when we finished 2nd behind Chelsea in the league, that would have made no sense and the board would have been blamed for not backing Poch or something like that.

And that's what he is. A punt.
23 years and we're still cheaping out on punts while our rivals spend big and laugh at us.
This is why we no longer win anything other than financial plaudits and CEO of the year awards.
Spending big on Havertz is nothing to be jealous about. Newcastle signing Tonali is another one that is nothing to get bothered about. Rice is decent but fuck paying £100 million plus for him.
Nearly every signing is a punt. You never know how it’s going to work out.

Yes of course, I just mean looking back in hindsight now, I imagine all supporters would agree we should have sold him now, but not then as we didn't know he would decline so badly.

Couldn't care less what our rivals spend, think or laugh at, seriously.

All that matters is what happens on the pitch. If he's crap, then you're right. If he improves the team, it's a success.

Thing is, I'm pretty sure you could look through every one of our rivals' squads and see similar "punts". Some will work out, others (the majority probably) won't and will be sold to Forest, then Bristol City, then Cambridge...

Agree but the flipside is that even if a player was a dead cert, or close to, i.e., Gvardiol, no matter how well they fit, no matter how sure the recruitment staff are.... they will always be off the table at Spurs.

and they aren't off the table because the club can't afford them.

Well, it might be the best we can hope for under this ownership. I'm not against us trying to get back to what served us well up to the middle of Poch's reign but it feels like an admission that we aren't going to compete.
Nice Post. On the money, sir..

I thought the statement on the Ange appointment was also quite telling. Lot's of words about using the academy etc suggesting a tight budget.
Sounds like they have no real intention of competing. Certainly not where it matters to us fans and where it involves the most risk. On the pitch.

Of course, some of us have known this for years and called it out, while the rest have also known it but bury there heads in the sand and plug their ears or throw tantrums at honest posts they don't like to read.

After all, as the little shit himself told us..."winning is hard" :memeokay:

I think given our recent transfer record erring on the side of caution when judging a signing like this is very understandable. We’ve been fucking crap at scouting and recruiting low level players so if this guy breaks that trend it will be an outlier.

What I think is laughable is hailing this as great business before he has even kicked a ball. That’s just delusional positivity for the sake of it which some people class as support.

Maybe. But our rivals tend to invest heavily in squads that progress and go on to win silverware.
We don't.
We already have a first XI made up mostly of players who our "rivals" would barely consider squad players..
But that aside, what really drew me into the debate was numerous posters suggesting he was a decent signing because he was free!
Suggesting that if we paid good money for him, he would be a poor signing for God sake!

Anyway, my view is he's an uninspiring signing that does little to inspire confidence that the club is finally serious about competing for and winning major honours.

Others think differently. That's fine.

People always make judgments on transfers before they kick a ball, do you really want the thread of every new transfer to be a thousand posts of "well we'll see how he does" until the season starts? Personally I've had an eye on Solomon since I've seen him score a brace away at Madrid, and I think it's a good piece of business.

It's equally as laughable to hail this as shit business too, which some people have decided to do.

That's just delusional negativity for the sake of it which some people class as support.

Why not just wait and see.

We've just spent upwards of 40M on one of the best playmakers in the league, all before pre-season
Yes. And we should be spending upwards of £40million on several key positions if that's what it needs to challenge for honours. That doesn't mean we can't be critical of diluting that improvement by sacrificing another squad place with an uninspiring bargain basement punt.

BTW. Your profile pic is making me wet. Is it you?

I haven't seen anyone saying that it's great business, or that he's a great player.
He's a no risk punt.
Get him on a free and if it works, great. If it doesn't then sell him on in a year or two.

I do find it strange that some of our fans are shitting on him before he's even kicked a ball for us.
It's almost as if they want him to fail.

Very strange behaviour from "fans" of the club.

Well we all know their 'MO' so it probably shouldn't come as a surprise. I've started perma-blocking them now, and it's genuinely making the site much more readable.

Much rather an echo chamber of positivity (or at minimum - realism) than a cesspool of hatred and negativity.
