Player Mathys Tel

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I was actually very encouraged by Tel. Consistently in dangerous positions. Couple of good shots. A few he’d like back.

Is he a finished product? Of course not!
But excited for his potential.
Exactly. Teenage striker making his EPL debut in a new country to boot, and had 7 shots - mainly from making space himself with greta separation movement. Also ran and ran all game and pressed well. Very excited by him, and think he will be out best LWF when Solanke is back.

I remember one play where he backed a couple of steps to get better position before a shot. You don't see that often. He looks like a scorer to me. Real excited to see him progress.

Watch the game back you might see it differently

The way he delayed and peeled back for the left foot chance from the Son cut back. He’d read the opportunity before the ball even reached Son.

Watch the way he was constantly calling the press forward, despite only being 19 and at a new club. That’s character and confidence.

Watch the runs he makes that we didn’t find. Bentancur missed a really one second half after turning Utd over in our third. He had 7 shots because he absolutely has the box instincts of a striker.

I don’t think anyone will fight you on the final execution vs UTD but it’s not unusual for any player to take a while to get match sharp at PL tempo. He’s already scored one, if he moves like that at Ipswich, he will score another one imo
I think you're over egging it slightly, but fair points. His movement was pretty good.

I just wasn't impressed with 1) his hold up play, & 2) his finishing, which for me are the two most important attributes in a striker.

People going on about the number of shots, that's all well and good but it's a bit pointless when some of those shots were the wrong decision and should have been passes. Porro has about 40 stupid long range shots a season, it doesn't make him a good attacking player.

Tel's technique with his left I thought was especially concerning. Looked like Bambi out there trying to take a shot.

Hold up play is clearly an area to work on.

He’s not Solanke level for that but I honestly don’t think there is another striker in the PL on Solanke level for hold up. At 19 it’s not realistic to expect Tel to be on that level. I don’t think he’s a million miles from Richy for hold up though.

I saw one shot that should have been a pass but he’s obviously very keen to make his mark and let’s be real, even Kane takes a shot or 2 every game that he could’ve passed. If he scores vs Ipswich I’d expect those decisions to settle down a bit.

Not worried by the left foot or right foot shooting technique. If he gets 7 shots off at Ipswich, he’s scoring at least 1.

I like the lad and think he's a good player but not sure he suits our system.

In our system our striker needs to be
- great in the air
- good at holding up,
- great off the ball
- demon presser
I'd say at this point Tel only meets the bottom 2.

Meanwhile in our system the winger needs to be..
- able to beat a man on inside or outside
- great crosser
- good acceleration
- good presser
I'd say he meets the bottom 2 again but not so much the top 2.. Always wants to cut in and shoot rather than stay wide and cross or play make.

Think tel is more of a skillful inside forward ala Del piero, Sonny etc.

Don't really think he nails either of those roles as much as I think he's a good player

Haaland isn't great for hold up play at all. Isak is a world class striker but IMO Solanke has a better hold up game.
