Micky is guilty on 3 goals. Isak burned him twice, especially the first. Gordon fooled him once. As a defender, the rule is: you get put on your ass, that makes you a clown. Bit like in the NBA when a point guard with sick handles breaks your ankles.

Doesn't matter. You play til the ref blows the whistle. Gotta be stronger and not get turned by Kane the way he did...prime Messi or Suarez does that to you, fair enough. But we're talking a 32yo Kane.

Anyway. You think Micky is a world class CB and I don't think he's there yet. I hope he stays fit & smashes that ceiling this season. Wanna see more thunderbolts, more crazy runs like vs Utd, more goal-line clearances.

I agree mate. Mickey is a brilliant high line defender because of his pace, but I do have reservations about his defending in a low block. His fundamentals aren't great, not terrible, but not as good as they're made out to be.
As much as I deride Ange, his highline tactics really hid Mickey's flaws, and showcased his strengths.

That’s definitely not the rule for anyone who knows anything about basketball. It’s fan/banter thing but anyone can tell you a bad defender never gets their ankles broken because they don’t put enough effort in.

I do agree that VDV had a bad day at the office and Isak did him 1v1 the first one. Was a foul by Gordon on Udogie but whatever, Udogie needed to be stronger. Second one was no pressure on the ball, you can’t really blame a last ditch defender for the offside getting broken.

So after all, in one game, Isak beat VDV one time in a last ditch 1v1. Did Perisic torment Van Dijk all the time as well ? Because he sat him down before a goal too

I said it in the Newcastle game thread but I'll say again that I really think VDV and Romero are elite front foot defenders, ie patrolling the open pitch and getting in front of attackers or fighting for loose balls, but in terms of defending deep and being camped around the penalty box it doesn't really suit them.
Neither of them are elite aerially and positionally they aren't as solid on the back foot as they are when being proactive. In a way I think we need to avoid being too deep otherwise we reduce their effectiveness massively.

Which is also why they'd be very much suited to a back 3.... (Remember; that is the set-up that Romero excelled in at Atalanta.)

....Can Danso be the anchor man in the middle?

I'd love to see us try 352........ Esp. given the current gaps/injuries in our squad...... We've nothing to lose v PSG.

At least there's a potential gameplan for that fixture. Burnely is far more perplexing in that respect.
