If we had to pay it all in one installment i doubt this would have gone as far as it has.

All the reports said that we were speaking to Forest. We would've known the terms of his contract.
Breaking News….The Premier League received Forest’s complaint this morning. At an emergency meeting an unusually speedy decision was made and Forest has been informed that their complaint

Levy wouldn't open his cheque book without knowing how much to be paid up front. If it's triggered means we are paying what's required, legally. Anything Forest asking for now is just a cuntish move to get more. Fucking hell.

Don't normally get wound up by transfer hiccups but I will be disappointed if this one falls out of bed. I liked him from when he was at Sheff U.

The fact we activated his release clause and they are so angry that we knew the conditions makes me think that whatever payment terms we offered are fine. But who knows really! Just seems like a contradiction if we triggered the release clause with our offer but forest can now demand different payment terms.
I really think people are over-complicating the matter tbh.

If a player has a release clause of x, you pay x, and the player signs, selling club has no say in it.

If a player has a clause of x, but you don't really want to pay x all in one go, so you negotiate a payment plan with the selling club over a number of years, maybe even paying more in total than the clause figure, which the selling club has to agree to, then you haven't activated the release clause at all, you've just negotiated a transfer like normal, using the release clause figure as a loose guide for negotiations.

That is exactly what we did with Porro. If it's what we were hoping to do with MGW, then we had absolutely no business getting him down for a medical and fully agreeing terms with him.

To me, the way in which things unfolded from Thursday evening to now, the only way it makes sense is if we were just activating the clause and lumping £60m to Forest, which admittedly does seem out of character for Levy/us.

This happened (or something similar) with Porro as well if my memory is correct.

Sporting kept throwing spanners into the wheels to delay the deal even with Spurs willing to pay his clause. So we had to pay more money but spread out over a longer time.
We weren't willing to pay his clause though, we wanted to pay it in instalments, that doesn't satisfy the release clause and so gave Sporting the power to negotiate. Had we activated the clause they'd have had no say in the matter.

Or we knew the exact amount they needed paid upfront to trigger the release clause and offered our payment terms around that.Which probably goes back to why they are unhappy as this would indicate we knew exactly what was involved to trigger the release clause.

Anyway who knows! I'm only throwing out theories!

So you think our Spurs activated a £60 mill release clause that has to be paid all up front?

No.
I think that there's 60m clause but does not specify how it is to be paid.
It's then between the 2 club to thrash out a structure and forest are using this to scare us off when really they should just accept it as the player wants to leave.

That's what I suspect here

I think there's clearly information that isn't out in the open on this one, maybe it will come out eventually, who knows, but the Forest owner being an absolute loon is another wildcard muddying the waters.

If we activated the clause, then there's nothing they can do to stop it, so the delay could suggest we actually didn't, but then how on earth did we get so far down the line as to have a medical planned/take place, and a here we go from Romano?

Baffling and annoying.

I feel that Forest will drag this out for so long that either we move on to other targets, another club comes in for him, or he is somehow persuaded into signing a new contract.

I feel like Forest will do everythign they can to stop this tbh.
