I'd genuinely play this for 1 game. Mid block. Deny them space on the counter.
Put son on the last man, they lack speed at the back. Dragusin to man mark Isak. Let Romero and VDV cover. Udogie and Porro on Gordon and Murphy/Barnes. They will have to play traditional wing back and keep the width.
Won't happen but I think we'd really stifle them and actually have a chance of coming away with 3 points.

The Solanke injury is a bit odd.

Apparently he got injured in the early stages of the Leicester game and immediately after the game his ankle blew up but he was doing media a couple days later saying how excited he is to play his first home game infront of the fans and how we will be fighting for the 3 points.

That being said Anges reaction to Pedro Porro injuring his ankle was unbelievable. Literally telling him to carry on and ignoring his call to the bench signalling the injury. What's to say Solanke didn't alert Ange earlier and he just told him to play on making it worse.

Last 2 games at St James park for us -

13.04.2024 - 0:4 loss
23.03.2023 - 1:6 loss
Season before that 2:3 win and season before 1:1 draw.
So in last 4 seasons we have got one narrow win, one draw and to absolute beatings.

Gonna be a test for Ange. If we do not make any adjustments, I can absolutely see third beating in a row. They have pace and directness and when we press high but give ball away, it is pretty easy task to make two passes and be one on one with Vic.

Though reading Howe's comments on the window, the general feeling around the club does not seem to be very rosy. So maybe that feeling translates to atmosphere and performance levels somehow.

For such game, I would absolutely prefer that.

If Solanke and Richie are absent, I'd like to see -

-----------Kulu----------
Son----Madders-Odobert
--Bissouma-Benta------
Udogie-VDV-Romero-Porro
----------Big Vic-------------

This side would have some ball-retention ability, some physicality, some ability to close down the channels in midfield, some dribbling and directness.

We need to stop thinking games like this are unwinnable

Yes it’s tough but we have a better side than Newcastle and need to go in with confidence

If we play like we did last week we’ll beat these comfortably

Whenever I see formations done like this I have second or so of confused panic.

Vic as the lone striker? Sonny in a back three?

What’s to say that solanke was fine to play on and get through the game and then it flares up once he stopped. That’s what happens with injuries like that.
