Ex-Spurs Player Paul Gascoigne

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I'd forgive Gazza. He's genuine and self-depricating in his jokes. I admit it'd be harder if I was just a young lad at Rangers being tripped up or booted or seriously injured by him for no reason though.

His free kick against Woolwich was before I was born and it is still one of my favourite goals ever. Even the Celtic fans loved him in Glasgow which says a lot. Some of the stories about him trying to find Ally McCoist with fireworks from accross the other side of the city, or going to the bar at half time in their cup final and then winning it for them... to be honest they all just add to his madlad legendary status in Scotland - even after the goal and celebration against Scotland as well.

Rangers are so shit now and need all the support they can get so I don't give a fuck if he supports a team he won everything for domestically, and it was single-handedly. I've never seen any Spurs player win an FA Cup so he beats all of the ones I've seen and can say or do what he wants.
Celtic fans think he's just another Hun cunt. Not sure where your Glasgow history comes from

Gazza was the greatest player I’ve ever seen in a Spurs shirt. People rave about Ginola, Klinsmann, Lineker, etc but they all joined Spurs well past their prime and their time here was fleeting. Modric and Bale both forced moves whilst their stars were rising. Hoddle? Never truly world class like Gazza but that didn’t mean I didn’t love him.

Gazza had the creative genius of an AM, the box-to-box of a CM (even though his extra weight suggested this shouldn’t be the case) and the tackling / industriousness of a DM. A complete midfielder.

How good would he have been with Harry Kane’s dedication to diet and training? I reckon we would be talking about him in the same breath as Pele and Maradona.

Off the field his pranks and funny stories are legendary. I particularly like the trouts in Gordon Durie’s car one.

The bad shit? Almost all driven by alcohol. I’m not saying that he should be given a free pass for beating his wife and the like, but alcohol addiction is a disease. That addiction combined with clearly some form of mental illness is a toxic recipe.

I’m not saying we should all forgive Gazzas transgressions. But we do need to put them in context.

People who didn’t see him live just don’t get that. He was phenomenal. I was lucky to get to go as a kid during that time quite a lot. If he played today he’d be easily the best player in the league. He’d be at City on £400k a week smashing them in showing KDB etc how to do it.

Although he probably wouldn’t have got through the system without a lot of luck.

1989/90 was when I first started going to games with my Dad. The season before was when I really paid attention on the TV and news etc.

Having England’s top generational talent as well as our leading striker was something I took for granted. Gazza was incredible. Skilful, with power and pace, a great finisher too with both his feet and his head. He had the lot. Cheeky bastard made it all the more fun as a young teenager.

A couple of years later and I’m watching the likes of Andy Gray, Paul Mahorn and Jason Dozzell.

Feels a bit like now that, the drop off from prime Kane, eriksen et al. Isn’t quite the dozzell levels, but it’s not miles off.

Can you guys not mention Dozzell in a Gazza thread please

Honestly, in my opinion if he had the diet and dedication of Kane he would have given Messi a run for his money on most Ballon D’or’s. But maybe he was too industrious and therefore exposed himself to injury too much.

A really sublime talent. I hope I see his ilk at WHL again.

The Raul Moat incident was pretty unforgivable.
Why?

It only exposed how badly he was suffering from mental health. He didn't rock up with another shot gun to try and help Moat, he (in his deeply troubled psychosis mind) thought he could help get through to someone he fleetingly thought was suffering as he was. It's not as tho his arrival hindered the Police in their objective to capture/kill Raul Moat. To hold that against him and deem it as unforgivable is utterly nonsensical.
